David Chadwick has said the new Labour government must not burden Welsh families and small businesses with the cost of repairing the UK economy.
Responding to the Prime Minister's announcement that the Budget will embrace the "harsh light of fiscal reality," the Welsh Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe MP stressed that big banks, tech companies, and energy giants should bear more of the financial load.
Speaking in Birmingham yesterday (Monday), Keir Starmer said his government would take "tough decisions". This will include raising taxes in order "to prevent austerity and rebuild public services".
Labour's general election manifesto contained what it called a "tax lock for working people".
The party also explicitly pledged not to raise rates of income tax, national insurance or VAT.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer will present her 2024 Autumn Budget to Parliament tomorrow (Wednesday).
Mr Chadwick told the B&R: "The previous Conservative UK Government left our economy in tatters.
“This new Labour Government cannot allow the burden of fixing this mess to fall on the ordinary Welsh families and small businesses who are already suffering from past Conservative tax rises.
“To fix our NHS and public services, deliver fairer funding for Wales and heal our economy, Labour should look to the big banks, big tech companies and oil and gas giants to raise the money needed.
“Anything else would be letting down so many who’ve already suffered so much.”
