A Powys charity has joined a national campaign to support refugees that wish to seek asylum in the UK.
Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees has joined the national #FillTheSkiesWithHope initiative as they look to support asylum-seeking refugees.
The movement is designed to combat the UK Conservative Government plans that would see asylum-seeking refugees sent to Rwanda.
Ailsa Dunn of Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees said: “We made paper planes with messages of support, such as fill the skies with hope, no planes to Rwanda, spread hope not hate, refugees welcome.
“We took to the Conservative office and delivered them with a message.”
It is hoped this campaign will help push back against the Nationality and Borders Bill that was passed in April 2022.
The bill came into force on June 28 2022, and according to United Nations Refugee Agency, it violates refugee conventions law.
James Evans, MS for Brecon and Radnorshire, said: “The UK Government provides safe, legal routes for refugees to enter the country.
“For many years, the United Kingdom has provided a warm welcome to refugees from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and elsewhere.
“Just the other day, more than 90 refugees and migrants died when a boat sank in the Mediterranean. These stories are shocking, and it shows the importance of discouraging people from making these treacherous journeys.”
