A family-run pub in Powys has been recognised as one of the best pubs in Wales.
The Royal Oak Pencelli was named runner-up in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Welsh Pub of the Year Awards 2022.
Having already won the award for Brecknockshire Pub of the Year back in July, the pub was then entered into the South Wales Pub of the Year category, which they also won.
In the national competition, the Royal Oak came in a very creditable second place, just missing out o the top spot to the Mold Ale House, Mold, Flintshire.
The landlords of the Royal Oak are Andrew and Frances Griffiths. They have prior form in the competition, having achieved a handful of top three finishes in the regional competition over recent years.
Andrew said: “We’re very chuffed to have received the award. We’d like to give a massive thank you to all of the amazing staff, all the suppliers, and most importantly, all of our treasured customers.”
Andrew and Frances moved up to the area from Cardiff back in 2017, and decided that they needed a new challenge.
“We are a family-run concern,” said Andrew.
“We put a lot of hard work into building up our business and soon formed a loyal customer following.
“We serve at least four real ales at any given time, and good honest home-cooked food.
“We are blessed to have a beautiful garden that backs onto the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, and an award-winning campsite, Pencelli Castle, just up the road from us.”
CAMRA’s National Pub of the Year is the annual competition to find the very best pub in the UK. The consumer organisation has been highlighting the best pubs in the country since 1988, and the competition helps to showcase quality pubs around the UK that are worth seeking out and visiting.
