Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team recently located two separate walkers lost in low cloud using phone technology.
The team recently passed 130 callouts for the calendar year.
The team were made aware on the evening of Saturday, November 30, of a walker lost in the low cloud.
After using What3Words and PhoneFind technology, one of the team’s Incident Controllers was able to locate the walker and give directions by phone, while a group of team members were on standby to head out and assist.
Using the guidance provided by phone he made his way to his car at Pont ar Daf and the rescue team stood down shortly after midnight.
Late afternoon the next day, Sunday, December 1, the team were contacted about another low cloud and disoriented walker situation.
The team’s regular joint response swung into action with Brecon Mountain Rescue Team to help a walker lost in low cloud near the summit of Pen y Fan.
A spokesperson for Central Beacons Rescue Team said: “Phone technology again gave us a position on which to focus but with a subsequent lack of phone contact we were concerned the walker had descended into the expanse of the Neuadd Valley where phone contact is virtually non existent.
“After a dual deployment from the west and east sides of the valley, he was located by Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales Searchdog ‘Rusty’.
“Cold, wet but uninjured the gentleman was escorted safely to Pont ar Daf car park and we were back at our base shortly before 8pm.”
