Students from Year 2 and Year 3 at Ysgol y Mynydd Du in Talgarth opened a pop-up shop recently to raise money for homeless people.

Teacher Dee Foster was asked by her students if she could help them open the shop.

Dee said: “I asked them lots of questions such as when, why and what will you sell? They said they would make things and bring things in from home to sell.”

The students wanted to sell what they had made to help raise money for homeless people, with one student saying they had seen a homeless lady in Brecon.

Once discussed, the students worked together to make it a reality, while Dee discussed the project with the headteacher.

Dee said: “One of them said they had seen a homeless person in the street on their way to a dance class and it made them want to do something nice for those in need. I said that they would need to prepare a plan in the form of a presentation and then we could present this idea to the headteacher.

“They went home that evening, linking up with each other online, to create a presentation to show the headteacher. The headteacher gave the go-ahead for the pupil's pop-up shop.”

Some of the items for sale included lucky dips and toys, as well as items from home.

Dee was struck by their determination to raise the money, which will be distributed to the people who need it most.

“During the last week of school, the pupils set up their shop outside our classroom,” she explained.

“They made a total of £133.95.

“They then made little envelopes and we have shared the money out and hope to distribute them over the summer to those in need. I am so proud of them!”

Eight students banded together to get the project off the ground, but they were further supported by the rest of their classmates.
