The Brecon Community Swap Shop has received praise in the Senedd for its efforts in tackling the rising cost of school uniforms.
The initiative, which provides families with free access to donated school clothes and essential items, was highlighted by Joyce Watson, MS for Mid and West Wales, during a discussion on support for families with school costs.
Ms Watson shared her admiration for the Priory Church in Wales Primary School’s permanent Swap Shop, for its innovative approach to tackling both the financial strain on families and the environmental impact of discarded uniforms.
Ms Watson said: "I was lucky to see a real excellent example of this for myself in Priory Church in Wales Primary School in Brecon, and the swap shop was set up by Councillor Matthew Dorrance and Town Councillor Michaela Davies, working with the Labour action team. But, thanks to funding from the Green Man Trust, they now have a permanent site at that school, instead of trying to access the use of halls, et cetera."
In response, Lynne Neagle MS, Cabinet Secretary for Education, commended the initiative, noting the importance of such community-driven projects.
“These are really important initiatives,” said Ms Neagle.
“The school essentials grant is a big help to families, but we also encourage schools to promote recycling schemes. It’s absolutely vital that we reduce the cost of the school day.”
The Swap Shop is housed in a refurbished shipping container at Priory Church School, fitted out by the Green Man Trust and decorated with vibrant murals and positive messages. It serves not only as a place for families to exchange school uniforms and other essentials but also as a social space offering support services, educational resources, and healthy food for the community.
It was officially opened in October by actor and Green Man Trust Ambassador, Iwan Rheon.
