A veterinary practice based in Hay-on-Wye has been supporting the pets of homeless people at Christmas by acting as a collection point for donations.
Hay Vets decided to support the Street Vets Christmas Shoebox appeal after the idea was suggest by veterinary nurse Pam Young in autumn.
The practice reached out through advertising and on Facebook, and were soon overwhelmed by the generosity of their customers and people in the surrounding community.
Street Vets is a charity which works tirelessly all year round to offer treatment and care to dogs that belong to homeless people.
Their shoebox appeal gives the public the opportunity to get involved by packing a shoebox with food, treats, blankets, anything that can offer a little comfort, especially during the cold winter months and around Christmas.
Hay Vets' practice manager Sarah Davies recently spoke to representative of Street Vets who said they've had a massive response over Christmas.
So much so that they asked, due to storage constraints, whether the vets could keep their shoeboxes until the new year as donations tend to dwindle in January and the gifts would be useful for supporting pets later in the year.
Items which are not suitable for Street Vets, due to their size or weight, and some dog food and pet treats donated by Hay Vets will be delivered to Brecon Food Bank who have been appealing for dog food.
Like the shoebox appeal, the vets have been asked to hold donations January due to a Christmas influx of donations.
Sarah said: "In both instances we are happy to hold all the wonderful donations until January, it makes sense to give when supplies are dwindling.
"Everyone at Hay Vets thanks you, the donors, from the bottom of our hears. Every donation makes a positive impact on dogs and their owners and your kindness and generosity has been wonderful."
