The new series of Our Lives, the documentary strand celebrating remarkable stories from across the UK, kicks off with a film from Wales.
This is an inspirational documentary following Katy and her sister Emma who are channelling grief into something very special.
Mobilising the community of Brynaman, on the south side of the Black Mountain on the edge of Bannau Brycheinog National Park, the sisters embark on an ambitious project: a charity football match between Wales and England.
They have to find a venue, enlist famous faces to play, find two big name managers and sell thousands of tickets.
The only problem is that neither of them knows anything about football.
But Katy and Emma have their sights set on some of the nation’s biggest stars and won’t take no for an answer.
Top of the list are footballers Ashley Williams, Joe Ledley and Jazz Richards - three of the Wales ‘Dream Team’ who reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016 – as well as the former Welsh manager, Chris Coleman. They are also targeting England players like Adebayo Akinfenwa, Nathan Dyer and Sol Campbell, rugby stars Shane Williams and James Hook, plus celebrities such as Roman Kemp and Joe Swash.
Driving them is the desire to raise as much money as they can for a special charity established in memory of Katy’s son Joseph. In December 2021, when Joseph was just three-years-old, he lost his life to neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. The charity, set up in his honour, raises money to help other families fundraising for life-saving or life-changing treatment. This football match is by far the charity’s most ambitious project yet.
The programme follows the sisters’ efforts to organise this huge event, all with a positivity that is contagious.
Our Lives: Two Sisters, One Goal airs on Friday, August 16 at 7:30pm on BBC One
