TESCO community champion Jayne Griffiths has received an award in recognition of her fundraising work.

Jayne, who works in Tesco’s Llandrindod Wells store, received an engraved glass trophy at an awards ceremony at the Holiday Inn in Cardiff.

Jayne even had to make a trip to London where she was shortlisted to become an ambassador for Tesco’s National Charity Partnership.

It came after the store’s staff raised more than £20,000 in three years for the partnership, which is a national effort to raise funds for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Jayne missed out on winning the ambassador role but says the achievement of her and her store in reaching the final at London’s Plaza Hotel had helped put “Llandrindod Wells on the map”.

Jayne, who oversees the Llandrindod store’s Bags for Help scheme as well as promoting the store’s other charitable work, said: “Simply being invited to go to the National Charity Partnership award in Cardiff was amazing, but to be invited to the London finals is overwhelming.

“Over the past three years, Tesco colleagues up and down the country have worked tirelessly to support and fundraise for the Partnership, raising money for the fight against type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“Over this time, my colleagues across the UK and I have gone above and beyond and the Tesco National Charity Partnership has raised £23 million.

“As far as Tesco stores are concerned, I feel like this award has helped put Llandrindod Wells on the map.”

In her role as community champion, Jayne works with local charities such as the Llandrindod Wells foodbank, MIND, the Bracken Trust, and the local Leg Club and gives talks to local WIs and Round Table, Rotary and Lions groups.

Over the three years Jayne and her Tesco co-workers raised money with events such as tombolas, lucky dips, fancy dress events, in-store collections and secondhand book sales.

They also organised an ice bath at the front of the store, which some of the managers were persuaded to take part in, and a highly popular “managers in stocks” event.
