A two-day celebration of all things green and gardening was a huge hit in Talgarth over the weekend.
Organised by Grow for Talgarth, in partnership with Talgarth Walking Festival, the Tuesday Lunch Club and the Talgarth Visitor Centre, Talgarth’s Big Garden Weekend proved to be a major success again last weekend.
Kicking off with a wheelbarrow rally on Griffiths' Green in the town centre, some 25 wheelbarrows were entered by local streets, clubs, organisations and individuals.
The three categories winners were: David & Janet Beven (Perfect Pollinators); Helen Loveday, Sunnybank, Trefecca (Blooming Marvellous); Tuesday Lunch Club (From Barrow to Bowl) and the children of Westfields with ‘A Garden on Wheels’.
Special thanks must go to judges Gaynor Weavers, Joel Durrell, (Gwernyfed Walled Garden) and Huw Lewis (Old Railway Line Garden Centre) and to Lady Kathryn Silk, High Sheriff of Powys for her presence and for presenting the awards with such enthusiasm.
There was also a well-supported Children’s Art and Craft competition, with entries displayed in the town hall. This was further accompanied by delicious cream teas as well as a total of 14 gardens kindly opened to the public throughout the weekend by local residents, which were dotted around every part of the town.
The beautiful and varying open gardens attracted almost 150 people over the two days and the spectacle of Red Kites being fed by Brian and Gaynor George in their garden proved to be especially popular.
Commenting on the success of the weekend, Rosie Williams, Grow for Talgarth Chair, told the Brecon & Radnor Express: “We are delighted by the success of the ‘Big Garden Weekend’ again this year – and want to express our heartfelt thanks to all competitors, both in the Wheelbarrow categories and the Children’s Art/Craft competitions.
“Also to all our local gardeners, who opened their gates, to our sponsor groups and businesses, and to our judges.
“Finally, to our special guest, Lady Kathryn Silk, High Sheriff of Powys, for graciously awarding the prizes and for adding a touch of pageantry to the weekend.”
