Last week saw Talgarth's senior resident and favourite son, John Hugo Gwynne, mark his landmark 103rd birthday.
His daughter Helen, son Les, his grandchildren and great grandchildren were all on hand to mark the happy occasion, as were many friends and neighbours from his native Talgarth and well beyond.
At John's wish, there was an open house party from 10:00am to 4:00pm last Tuesday. A constant stream of well wishers made their way to his Castle Terrace home in Talgarth throughout the day.
Cllr Louise Elston-Reeves, Chair of Talgarth Town Council spoke for many, when she said: “I am privileged to have been invited to Mr John Gwynne's 103rd birthday celebrations.
“Mr Gwynne is a much valued member of our community, having given so much over the years - not only as a store owner, a town councillor but also as a WWll RAF veteran. This is even more poignant as we prepare for the 80th anniversary of D-DAY.”
Mr Gwynne received a number of visits from other community leaders, including the longest serving Town Councillor and fellow horse racing enthusiast, Cllr Malcolm Dodds; stalwart Town Clerk, Josephine Rumsey; Powys County Councillor for Talgarth, William Powell and veteran local butcher, Bryan George, who now chairs the Talgarth Traders' Forum.
However, the culmination of the day was a special visit from RAF Squadron Leader RP Catterall, a fighter pilot, currently involved in Military Flying Regulations with the MAA.
The two veterans shared anecdotes of their RAF service and agreed that the Air Force brings with it bonds of family, that last a lifetime.
Just before the guests departed, Mr Gwynne blew out the candles on his special 103rd birthday cake and thanked everyone for helping to celebrate with him.
