SHARON Quine, a teacher at Llangors Church in Wales Primary School, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Mentor of the Year in Hospitality and Lifestyle award in the Powys Business Awards.
The Mentor of the Year award is a new category in the annual awards sponsored by the Cambrian Training Company.
Pam McIntosh, a teaching assistant at the school, nominated Ms Quine last term after experiencing her mentoring skills first hand.
Mrs McIntosh, who is undertaking her Child Care Learning Development Level 3, has been working alongside Ms Quine since January of this year. Mrs McIntosh recently retired from the army after 22 years of service and is a parent of a pupil at Llangors School. The transition from an army career to working at a school has been a surprisingly smooth one. Mrs McIntosh said: “Ms Quine is knowledgeable, caring, engaging, patient and enthusiastic, in simple terms, she is ‘super woman’. She strives to help me develop not only intellectually but also in all aspects of life, without her I am not sure I would be here.”
Ms Quine has been teaching for over 20 years and has worked at Llangors School for the last 11 years. She is married to Dr John Taylor, a fisheries scientist with Natural Resources Wales and they have two daughters who attend Crickhowell High School. Llangors head teacher Lynne Jones, said. “The school is very proud to have been recognised for the excellent relationships we have here between all staff members. Mentoring colleagues is what I believe we do particularly well here.”
The winners of the Powys Business Awards will be announced tomorrow (Friday, September 28).
