A GRANDMOTHER has released her father's personal photographs of the first major naval battle of the Second World War.

Avril Gerrish's father witnessed at first-hand the battle of the River Plate when three Royal Navy cruisers chased the German pocket battleship the Graf Spee across the South Atlantic and into Montevideo harbour.
