THERE’S some good news for the tourist industry this week with a national company ranking the Brecon Beacons as one of the top twenty locations for a staycation this summer.
Five of the top 20 family-friendly staycation locations are in Wales with the Beacons coming in at number 16 just behind Pembrokeshire at number 6, Snowdonia at number 8 and Gwynedd at number 10, with nearby Carmarthenshire at number 17 and Monmouthshire at number 26.
According to the list of the top 50 holiday destinations, 40 per cent of the country’s top vacation spots are in Wales.
The research was undetaken by online toy shop Pound Toy and ranked some of the best staycation destinations in the country on the following factors: the number of green spaces, the lowest population, the number of child-friendly outdoor activities, the number of child-friendly restaurants, the number of campsites and the average summer temperature (°C).
Predictably enough the list was topped by Cornwall with the Lake District and the Highlands of Scotland taking the other top three places.

“Many of our summer holiday plans have been ruined due to the coronavirus crisis, and the constantly changing border restrictions and quarantine rules make it very difficult to plan a trip abroad.
“And with the summer holidays in full swing, many people are wanting to take their children on holiday. Which is why more and more families are opting for a break right here in the UK. And it’s not all bad news, as the UK is home to some of the most beautiful destinations, where there is plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained!
“The smaller towns and villages in the UK are also great for families, especially in the current climate, as the low population means it’s much easier to keep your distance from any large crowds. Let’s just hope the sunshine stays!”
