More than 2,000 Christmas shoppers defied torrential downpours to make Crickhowell’s Christmas Market a roaring success.

The heavens opened just as the market got under way and continued throughout the evening – but that didn’t deter the hardy bargain hunters.

Totally Locally Crickhowell and Crickhowell Rotary Club closed the High Street and erected a big marquee to fend off the worst of the weather. They also organized indoor events in the Clarence Hall and Saint Edmund’s Church, which gave people some refuge. And covered food stalls and warm drinks kept spirits up while Rotary sang “raindrops keep falling on my head” Shoppers were also treated to an impromptu demonstration of “Singing in the rain” dancing by Police Special Support Officer, Billy Dunne.

Totally Locally Chair, Emma Corfield Walters, said: “Totally Locally is all about a community coming together and making a town a better place to live, work and visit....last night’s market really did showcase the best of this fantastic town. Despite the appalling weather traders and shoppers both turned out in huge numbers to support a community event which has grown in size over the past 4 years. The market is a real boost to independent traders at the start of the Christmas period and has a wonderful festive feel about it that has been lost in larger towns. The event is a coming together of all community groups and businesses. Totally locally would like to extend special thanks to Crickhowell Rotary Club for their stalwart support in the planning of this event and their presence on the night ensuring everything ran smoothly. There are many more people to thank and I hope they are proud of what we’ve all achieved and are up for doing it all again next year!

Vice chair, Emma Bevan, said: “I am overwhelmed with the support and attendance of the visitors despite horrendous weather! The event was fun, friendly and an amazing atmosphere, with so many community groups, local businesses on the High Street and all the designer/makers all working together to create a unique experience for all the family"

Crickhowell’s Clarence Hall was turned into a roller skating rink and the Cric centre served mulled apple juice and hosted a Christmas Tree Competition. St Edmund’s Church was the venue for from local charities and the Church bells rang out the Festive message.
