RESIDENTS of Erwood have won a 10-year battle and saved their public toilets from the final flush.

Toilets throughout Powys faced closure and demolition but the residents of Erwood felt the toilets needed to stay open.

Kirsty Williams AM has been fighting the battle along with the residents to keep the public toilets open and pointed out to Powys County Council that they had not been claiming Welsh Assembly grants for such facilities.

A sign saying ’Save Erwood Toilets’ was placed on the roof of the current building and when the problem arose again this year more action was needed.

The general public, Kirsty Williams AM and Chris Davies MP and members of the Community Council rallied and formed a constituted Trust named Erwood Pitstop to manage the public facilities.

Seven weeks later the Trust was formed and fundraiser Karen Laurie-Parry said: "There has been so much praise for all those involved in this campaign for their determination and commitment.

"Now the official handover has taken place from Powys County Council to Erwood Pitstop Trust is it now all the hard work begins . It is so rewarding to see this public facility being managed by a community group and for all to have a comfort and information stop while waiting for a bus of travelling through.

"Tourism and Agriculture are fundamental to the Mid Wales Economy and Erwood Pitstop feels they are contributing to that Economy by meeting the General Public and Businesses Personnel and Information Needs."
