On Monday, March 31, just before 6pm, Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Dyfed-Powys Police to an incident with a French visitor to the Ystradfellte waterfalls area suffering a possible heart attack on the Four Waterfalls Trail.

Due to the potential serious nature of the situation, the rescue team instigated an ‘Area Alert’ which meant nearby members of neighbouring rescue team, Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, also responded.

A spokesperson for Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: “One of our first team members to arrive is an EMT in his ‘day job’ and was able to provide the initial care, soon followed by other team members including a paramedic and our team doctor.

“The medical team, whilst concluding it was not a heart attack, decided that the gentleman was still suffering from a potentially very serious medical condition which required urgent evacuation to definitive care.

“Hence we requested air support from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Search & Rescue helicopter from St Athan. They deployed and the R187 was on the scene within 15 to 20 minutes.”

The casualty was promptly loaded onto the aircraft and flown directly to hospital for a further full assessment and treatment.

“We thank the aircraft crew for their much appreciated assistance and our colleagues from BMRT for their help as well,” said the Central Beacons spokesperson.

“We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and hope all turns out well.”
