Hay Town Council has announced upgrades made to a popular walking route in the town.

The Bailey Walk, which runs alongside the River Wye from Wyeford Road to The Warren, has seen multiple improvements.

The route was shut for nearly two weeks as revetment was replaced along with steps to the riverside footpath and handrails which also saw an upgrade.

Used by locals and visitors of the town, the route is roughly one and a half miles long.

The walk was named after former Lord of the Manor Sir Joseph Bailey, who laid out the riverbank at his own expense for the public’s use.

Work was completed on the walkway by Lawson Joy and his young team from Joy Contracting & Groundworks.

Footpaths have been re-profiled where subsidence had occurred and the team installed replacement post and rail fencing at three bench viewpoints.

In a statement posted on Facebook, a spokesperson for Hay Town Council said: “Hay Town Council is pleased to announce the works on the Bailey Walk are finished and it has reopened.

“We realise it was inconvenient being shut for nearly two weeks, especially for those of you that walk there regularly, but we were up against a tight deadline to get it done, so thank you for your patience.

“We would like to thank Brecon Beacons Local Nature Partnership for funding the work, Lawson Joy and his young team from Joy Contracting & Groundworks for getting the job done on time and on budget in arduous winter weather.

“So far, we have received nothing but praise for the work and we hope all that use the Bailey Walk will carry on enjoying this riverside footpath for many years to come.”

Without funding from Brecon Beacons Nature Recovery and the Town Council Nature Recovery Grants Programme, this work would not have been possible.
