Saturday, September 7 saw the hugely successful annual Hundred House Show held at Lower Llaneon by kind permission of Stephen Williams and Richard James, writes E A Bates.
The classes of sheep, horse and pony classes, dog show and horticultural and children section all saw big entries which were very competitive.
A huge crowd also gathered to watch the wonderfully interesting demonstration of wheelwrighting by Michael Davies of Llangyfrwys. He showed how to put an iron rim band onto a wooden cart wheel, by heating the rim up in a fire before fitting it on the wooden wheel before rapidly cooling the rim with buckets and buckets of cold water. Michael had a busy day as he had his old Marshall tractor on display as well.
Mervyn Price and his team of helpers had again assembled a wide and varied collection of displays, stationary engines, cars and tractors. Mervyn exhibited half a dozen tractors from his collection of Nuffields, Leylands and Marshalls which he cajoled friends into driving them around the ring in the parade of tractors.
Ali Williams, Hendy, drove his cabbed Leyland 154, whilst John Bates of Rhayader (who had his Triang construction models on display) drove Mervyn’s restored Nuffield 10/42.
Another exhibitor who had his Zetor collection on display was garage owner Martin Davies. Consisting of a 3545 and a 3045 both four-wheel drive models, two 3511s one with a Twose mid-mounted hedge cutter attached which Martin drove himself whilst son Ben drove a most unusual blue painted Zetor 25K model.
Gwystre’s Keith Williams had his Massey Ferguson teamed with a rare Massey Ferguson baler. Rob Gore had his restored standard Fordson and Alan Bowen of Llanstephen had his restored David Brown 770, this 1965 made tractor had spent its working life in Ireland before being imported in 2004. Edwin Arblaster drove his Perkins (Montego) engined Ferguson all the way from Llandovery, whilst D W Hopkins came from Trawsfynydd with his 1952 David Brown Cropmaster.
There were a number of Countys on show. Local landlord Gareth Morris had his restored County Super 6, and Brian Bufton had his County 4000 four. Martin Davies had his County 944 driven by son Shaun. New Radnor’s Martyn Nicholls had his County 1174 while father Tom had two Internationals on display.
Amongst the display of cars, P H Morris from Kington had his 1953 Morris 6 complete with Radnorshire registration. Howard and Liz Wright from Llandrindod Wells had their Austin 7 van, which looked extremely small compared to modern day vans. Mark Hulin-Taylor had his 1986 Vauxhall Nova, while Llandegley’s David Lewis had his 1966 Hillman Minx.
The car parade finished the ring activities with Mervyn Price thanking his team of helpers and all exhibitors for their attendance.
