A couple who met on a Facebook walking group have got engaged while on a walk in Waterfall Country.
Roger Taylor, 28 and Sam Price, 37, both joined an online walking group to discover new places and meet people along the way.
But little did the couple know that a friendly walk would turn into a proposal just over a year after crossing paths.
Sam, a dental nurse from Abertillery, said: “Neither of us was looking for a relationship - we were just looking for likeminded people to go for walks with!”
Both joined the ‘Walking in Wales’ Facebook group in 2021, after completing most of their local walks during the difficult days of lockdown.
With more than 130,000 members, the group was set up for people who love spending time in our gorgeous countryside and want to share photos from their walks and to arrange to meet up with others to walk together.
Roger, a driver from Cardiff, met after Sam posted on the group asking for recommendations on a new place to walk - having completed many solo walks and cold water swims across South Wales.
Roger replied to her post and the pair started chatting online before arranging a walk together as friends.
Roger, a father-of-two children aged seven and nine, said: “I joined the group two months before speaking to Sam, purely because I wanted ideas of where to go and meet fellow outdoorsy people.
“We met up initially and it just grew from there.”
But over time, their friendship progressed to something more and they soon got together.
Sam, also a mother-of-two children aged six and seven, said: “We were on our own journey, but he’s a funny guy so I stuck around!”
The pair called everyday, visited gorgeous locations across the Welsh peaks, and in December last year took a special Christmas visit to the Pontneddfechan waterfalls.
After a year together this September, Roger decided to ask Sam to marry him - at the exact same spot - and Sam “gladly said yes.”
Roger said: “I had been planning it for months, and knew I wasn’t going to do the everyday restaurant thing - it’s just not me and Sam and wouldn’t have the same effect.”

The thoughtful father also ensured the ring he gave to his fiancée was bespoke to fit her “nature vibe”.
He said: “I had it made at Pravins, and it has a big green emerald in it, to represent leaves and nature.”
The pair say they owe their engagement to the Facebook group, as due to their distant locations, they believe it is extremely unlikely they would have met.
Sam said: “We’d spoken about getting engaged but I was not expecting it!
The pair hope to set the date in 2024.
After Sam shared photos of the proposal on the Walking in Wales group, the couple admit they were “shocked” after racking thousands of likes and hundreds of congratulatory comments.
She wrote: “Just wanted to say I met the most wonderful man in this group and this week he took me to the waterfalls and proposed.
“Forever grateful for him coming into my life and for this group.”
Roger said: “It’s a great group, everyone is so friendly.”
Sam added: “It’s so lovely that people are happy for us.
“It’s just like its own little community, and I want to show my appreciation for the group - it’s amazing to have met somebody through it!”
