These twin chapels from the 1800s have a distinctive Gothic style - and are for sale for £100,000.
The chapels, in Brecon Cemetery on Cradoc Road, are Grade II listed and have traditionally been used by visitors to the cemetery.
Powys County Council, who have the chapels listed for sale on their property portal, announced in 2021 that they were planning to sell the chapels, and some members of the community - such as Councillor Matthew Dorrance - said that the council should have held a public consultation on the fate of the chapels due to their connection to the cemetery.
Writing on his website in June 2021, Mr Dorrance said that the sale could be “worrying [for] people who have laid the ones they care about to rest there.”
However, the council clarified that the sale would not have an effect on the cemetery, saying: “The cemetery will function as it does now. The reuse of the buildings may mean that the buildings are permanently occupied which will help with site security.
“The purchasers will be granted appropriate rights of way over the roadway with appropriate clauses to ensure they do not cause a nuisance to the retained cemetery.”
The chapels mirror one another, both being early examples of 19th century gothic chapels, with features such as classical arches, decorative brickwork and flagstone and tiled patterned flooring.
One of the chapels retains its pews, while the other is empty, and both are described as being suitable for conversion into a home, a holiday let or a workspace, subject to planning and listed building consent.
The chapels also have views of the Beacons, as well as easy access to the town centre.
The chapels are being sold by James Dean Estate Agents for a price of £100,000.
David James of James Dean Estate Agents commented: “This is a rare listing - there is just the one cemetery in Brecon and these are the chapels that served it.
“Sometimes you do see a church go on the market but if you do, it is just one single property - this is the only pair of chapels I’ve seen for sale.
“They could be used for a house, a holiday let, somewhere to work from perhaps - and they have incredible views!”
