Members of Brecon Phoenix Amateur Boxing Club have been in action recently at this year’s Welsh Novice Championships.

The championships were held in Cardiff and Aberbargoed earlier this month.

First up, Brandon Aviet faced a very strong boxer from Cardigan Amateur Boxing Club, home of Commonwealth medalists Ioan and Garan Croft.

Brandon boxed very well, having recently recovered from illness and gave a strong perfomance. He ultimately lost but gained valuable experience in defeat.

Next up was 15-year-old Rakhat Clarkson.

Rakhat did incredibly well to convincingly win his semi-final bout against a tall strong opponent who came with a large and noisy support section.

He faced a very strong skilled opponent in the final the following day who received a bye in the previous round.

Rakhat gave everything in the bout and boxed very well with speed, strength and great fitness.

He unfortunately didn’t get the decision but his coaches were incredibly proud of his performance over the weekend and he richly deserved his silver medal.

Senior female boxer Jaya Sebburn was ready to rumble in the 66kg final on Sunday but her opponent didnt make weight, causing frustration after weeks of preparation and self discipline.

Coaches Dave Gilbert, Sarah Pole and Claire Sebburn were immensely proud of their boxers and the entire club looks forward to further bouts in 2023.
