IT was a bad day for Brecon Cricket Club in the sizzling heat on Saturday with both teams going down to respective seven wicket defeats.

At Usk the 1st team were inserted on a green top which gave the home team an advantage which they capitalised on in some order shooting the below strength Brecon batting line up out for paltry 82 runs. In reply and despite losing three quick wickets Usk knocked the runs off in 12 overs to put a dent in Brecon’s top three league challenge.

For Brecon with the bat no one got going and with the ball despite taking three wickets the Usk batting was never under pressure in what was a disappointingly one sided encounter.

In Brecon in a game sponsored by Beacon Detection the second team batting first posted a creditable 210-5 but it proved inadequate as Rogerstone batsmen set about their task with relish stacking up 80 runs off the first 10 overs and ultimately coasting home with 12 overs and seven wickets in hand.

With the bat James Morgan top scored with 57 on his welcome return to Brecon colours. Steve Kenchington (40) continued his good form and Gwyn Price (34), Gethin Phillips (24) and Mark Waldeck (20) also made contributions to the total.

Derek Osborne made an early break through with the ball however Rogerstone kept the runs flowing with only Ryan Morgan keeping any control on things in the middle overs whilst taking a wicket in a good spell. Gwyn Price late on was the only other bowler to take a wicket as Rogerstone made it home comfortable.

The first team are at home next Saturday to Blackwood and will be hoping to re-find their early season form with the bat against a good Blackwood unit whilst the second team visit Blackwood where the home side have put up some big totals this season.

JUNIOR CRICKET

Brecon U11s welcomed Pentwyn to The BSA Ground on Friday night. Pentwyn batted first scoring 230-6 wickets.

There was some excellent bowling from Brecon with Luke Dawson bowling a maiden over and two wickets for Jac Kenchington and Rhys Jones and one wicket for Leo Punter and Aneurin Skinner.

Brecon then batted with a very solid opening partnership for Abbie Davies and Gwenni Kenchington, both scoring some excellent 4s.

Leo Punter and Luke Dawson then put on another 21 runs. Jac Kenchington and Roly Warry then came to the crease and put on an excellent 52 runs in their four overs. Jac scoring nine fours, 36 off 13 balls. Rhys Jones, Aneurin Skinner and Brynach Skinner concluded an excellent batting session for Brecon, with Brecon scoring 288 for only two wickets.

An excellent performance by a very young U11 team.
