Brecon Motor Club members excelled themselves at the weekend when they laid on two well organised days of speed hillclimbing on the Epynt Ranges, writes Mark Griffin.

Weather conditions were hot and balmy on Saturday and the hill record was in sight once again.

Simon Rogers from Dryslwyn holds the record of 45.04 seconds but despite running a new Caterham this year he could only record 45.81 seconds.

Hot on his heels on day one was event sponsor John Morgan from Bridgend who did well to get close in his much modified Westfield.

On day two Rogers had more rapid company when Lyn Morgan managed to get his Casmat 1000 working after suffering clutch problems and was set to upset the applecart before a 20-minute deluge put any hopes of a fastest time down the drain. Rogers prevailed to take FTD honours on Sunday too.

Local drivers attempting the challenge included Cathedine resident Jon Davies who used his rally prepared Darrian to record third in class on each day.

Bronllys mobile mechanic Liam Griffiths purchased an Audi TT for this event and was still working on it at 11:30pm the night before but it was all worth it with an award for second in his class on Saturday and third on Sunday.

Llandrindod Wells sent Leonard Milner down for the day on Sunday and he debuted his latest acquisition - an immaculate Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000. Having previously used an Audi Quattro he was bemoaning the lack of power on the steep hill but still enjoyed himself.

Also making an appearance was former Heol Senni man Wayne Arrowsmith who used his immaculate Ford Escort on the hill and looked to be having a ball.

As ever a large number of club members and others pulled together to make the day run slickly and everyone left sporting a big smile despite the biblical rain storm.
