Brecon Corries 2 - Baglan Dragons 1
FOOTBALL is a family affair at the Brecon Corries this season as defender Dale Evans has been joined in the team by his three younger brothers.
Dale has been a stalwart of the Corries defence for a number of seasons while brother Craig and twins Joel and Corey were playing for Brecon Northcote in the Mid Wales League last season.
But they joined the Rich Field side over the summer and helped them to an opening day victory in the Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance League Premier Division over Baglan Dragons.
There was very little to separate the two teams in the first-half but a Luke Roughley goal gave the Corries a slender lead going into halftime.
Rhys Thomas made it 2-0 shortly after the break and the game looked easy for the Corries and as it the visitors could have had a wasted trip from Port Talbot. But the Dragons dug deep and got a goal back midway through the second half to set up a a tense last 20 minutes.
The Corries created more chances with superb efforts from Luke Roughley and player-manager Damien Daniels but both were denied by outstanding saves from the visiting keeper.
Corries secretary Adam Jones said the club was pleased to welcome the three younger Evans brothers to the team and the South Wales league which although one tier below the Mid Wales second division in the Welsh pyramid is considered a competitive and demanding environment.
“Joel, Corey and Craig were playing for Brecon Northcote last season.
“Their solid performance today shows that they’ve got what it takes to compete in this league, and the step up in the standard of football will vastly improve these ambitious players,” said Jones.
Saturday’s game was sponsored by Sgt Adam Jones of the Royal Air Force/MOD and DE&S.
The Corries’ next game is at home to Canton Liberal FC on Saturday, August 18. Kick-off is 2.30pm.
