It was not the best start to the New Year for Brecon Corries, who slipped to a 4-0 defeat at Newport Corries, one from bottom in the Ardal League South East.

Fourth-placed Corries failed to score in a league game for the first time this season as Newport netted all their goals in the last 23 minutes. Lewis Brown broke the deadlock on 68 minutes and Kushal Phyual added a second soon after. There was still time for Corries to salvage something but two late goals from substitute, Jake Dymond completed their misery.

It was a disappointing weekend for Corries who were beaten 14-2 at Newport City in the FAW Youth League South East on Sunday. Tobias Huggins was Corries’ chief tormentor with six of the goals while Nyle Slade and first team manager, Damien Daniels netted for the Brecon side who trailed 6-2 a half-time.

Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Radnor Valley were frozen out in the Ardal League North East where the entire day’s programme was postponed. And it was the same story in the MMP Central Wales League with no games in the north or south divisions while the eight scheduled League Cup ties were also postponed.

In the JD Cymru Premier, Aberystwyth Town finished their games in the first phase with a big 6-1 home defeat at the hands of Briton Ferry Llansawel and are rooted to the foot of the table, five points adrift of their nearest rivals. Luke Bowen and Thomas Walters each scored twice for Ferry with Alex Gammond and Jasper Payne completing the six hit in stoppage time. Topscorer, Jonathan Evans netted for The Seasiders, who included new signings, Elliot Scotcher, Cuba Cline and Abdi Sharif in their match day squad with manager, Antonio Corbisiero labelling the performance as embarrassing.

Briton Ferry’s win means Newtown, whose match against Penybont was postponed, drop into the bottom two. Both Aberystwyth and Newtown now have it all to do in the second half of the season if they are to maintain their ever present record in the top flight.

Newtown have lost all six games since Callum McKenzie took over as head coach and have won just one of their last fourteen following a bright start to the term.

Newtown have recalled Devon Torry and Dylan Downs from their loan spells at Aberystwyth Town and Caersws respectively but Josh Lock has returned to TNS following his loan spell at Latham Park only to be loaned out again to Caernarfon Town. The Robins have signed goalkeeper, Abiden Edwards from Bala Town and are looking to bring in a couple more new faces.

In the one game in the JD Cymru (North), Guilsfield saw their revival under new manager, Gavin Allen halted as they fell to a 4-0 defeat at Llandudno whose goals game from Anthony Stephens, Callum Stephens, Adam Stephens and Mark Cadwallader. Guilsfield slip to ninth in the table but are still highest placed of the Mid Wales clubs with Penrhyncoch and Caersws below them in the table. Penrhyn are just two points off the relegation places with Caersws a point better off. Caersws, who have lost their last four without registering a goal, have been the biggest early movers in the JD Cymru (North) in the January transfer window. As well as Tommy Rowlands and Ashley Jones, The Bluebirds have also signed Jake Mann from Welshpool Town and are also believed to be keen on Iwan Smout, who was captain of Newtown’s academy side.

Trethomas Bluebirds have seen their remarkable journey continue in the JD Cymru (South). Last season’s Ardal South East League Champions and FAW Amateur Trophy winners maintained top spot with Gareth Tedstone, Lee Baldock and Thomas Gameson securing a 3-1 victory over Goytre on Friday night.

Llanelli Town are Bluebirds’ main rivals for the title and remain two points behind the leaders after a solitary strike from Danny Williams gave them a 1-0 win at Afan Lido. Llanelli have signalled their ambitions with three signings in the transfer window including Liam Eason, who is the division’s top goalscorer, from Pontypridd United, and his arrival might just see them edge the title race.
