Brecon Corries returned to winning ways with a 4-1 home victory over Abercarn United in the Ardal League South East.

ARDAL LEAGUE SOUTH EAST

The Chisels bounced back from their defeat at Newport Corries the previous week to maintain their impressive home form in difficult conditions.

It took 41 minutes for Corries to make the breakthrough when a good move down the left resulted in Craig Evans crossing for Matty Tong to net with a first time strike. The hosts scored again in first half stoppage time with Craig Evans slipping brother, Joel through and he slid the ball under Abercarn keeper, Travis Madden.

A hard working Abercarn were not going to lie down in the second half and threatened before Calum Gwillim pulled a goal back midway through the half. They then had a further effort ruled out for offside and Corries knew they had a game on their hands. Corries had a couple of chances and saw Madden produce a top drawer save before Joe Cooper popped up with his first goal of the season from an assist by the outstanding Liam McAnally on the 90-minute mark. And just for good measure, Craig Evans added a fourth goal, to add to his two earlier assists, in stoppage time.

Corries are away at bottom of the table Treharris Athletic on Sunday when they welcome Luke Roughley and keeper, Stephen Price back from suspension.

Brecon Corries Youth also responded to a heavy defeat last time out in the FAW Youth League South East by beating Goytre AFC (Gwent) 4-2 at The Rich Field on Sunday, with goals from Charlie Powell, Leo Davies, Jack Davies and Jamie Williams.

ARDAL LEAGUE NORTH EAST

A controversial decision robbed Builth Wells of a point as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Kerry in the Ardal League North East. In a week which saw Lyndon Jones join Tommy Rowlands in departing for Caersws, The Bulls turned in one of their best performances of the season but with no reward.

The only goal came after seven minutes when Richard Davies put The Lambs ahead with a good finish. Builth gradually got on top although there were few other chances in a first half which developed into a midfield battle. The Bulls dominated after the break and Jamie Evans grazed a post with a terrific effort on the hour. Adam Farmer headed wide from a Cormac O’Byrne cross and then Builth thought they had equalised in the closing minutes. Danny Ives flicked on a Farmer corner for Ryan Powell to nod in from close range and with no assistant’s flag, the referee awarded the goal. But Kerry protests led to the two officials consulting and disallowing the effort for offside. Builth manager, Dylan McPhee has had his fair share of red cards over the years and was sent off in the aftermath, but this one was certainly understandable.

Llandrindod Wells also suffered a narrow away defeat, beaten 2-1 at Dolgellau, whose win puts them top of the table. But Llandrindod, without a number of regulars, put in a huge shift only to cruelly see substitute, Dion James snatch a winner for Dogellau in the 89th minute.

Danny Hall had given Llandrindod a 16th-minute lead with his first goal since returning from Builth Wells when he controlled a Cori Davies free-kick to finish well. The Spa men might have added a second but Reuben Edwards fired into the side netting. Dolgellau’s Gerwyn Williams was the Ardal League North East top goalscorer last season and he headed an equaliser with just over half an hour played. As the game panned out, Dolgellau saw a greater share of possession but Llandrindod defended superbly and it looked as if the teams would settle for a point apiece until James’ late intervention.

Radnor Valley found themselves without a game with scheduled opponents, Cefn Albion having no pitch available and elsewhere there were wins for Llangollen Town and Chirk AAA. Llangollen won 3-2 at Llanfair United thanks to Kristian Jones (2) and Jack Welsh with Jack Jones and Matt Stephens scoring first and last for Llanfair.

Bottom-of-the-table Chirk beat Rhos Aelwyd 2-1 with Tom Freeman netting twice to earn their first win since September.

Title favourites, Llanuwchllyn, with games in hand, moved up to seventh in the table in midweek with a 6-1 win against Llangollen Town. Meilir Williams moved above Radnor Valley’s Joey Price at the top of the scoring charts with a hat-trick. Gwydion Roberts, Tomos Roberts and Michael Pritchard were the other marksmen with Will Cooke replying for Llangollen.

Llanuwchllyn bowed out of the Dragon Signs FAW Amateur Trophy with a 1-0 defeat at Trearddur Bay at the weekend. But Bow Street and Brickfield Rangers are through to represent the Ardal League North East in the quarter-finals. Bow Street twice came from behind to win 3-2 at Lex X1 with goals from Callum Page (2) and Richie Ricketts while Brickfield beat Canton on penalties after their tie ended goalless.

ASPIDISTRA RADNORSHIRE CUP

Aeron Powell grabbed a hat-trick as Builth Wells eased into the semi-finals of this season’s Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup with a 6-0 midweek victory at Rhayader Town. Jamie Evans netted twice against his former club and Lyndon Jones was also on target as The Bulls, who are the Cup holders, raced into a four-goal lead inside 23 minutes.

Rhayader knew it was important to start well if they had any hopes of causing an upset but they were blown away in the first half by an impressive Builth, for whom Aeron Powell and Lyndon Jones, in his last appearance for the cub, were outstanding. Powell netted Builth’s opener with a great finish after being set up by Ollie Woods after just four minutes and Jones volleyed a second from a Chris Roff free-kick. Two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half ended the tie as a contest. Jamie Evans followed up to score the rebound when Jones hit the bar with another free-kick and Powell got his second from an Iollan Guinane assist.

Builth had a strong bench and made wholesale changes for the second half when Jones set Powell up for his hat-trick before Evans completed the scoring, cutting inside to fire into the corner.

Builth now go into the hat for the semi-final draw along with Llandrindod Wells, Radnor Valley and Presteigne St Andrews

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUES

Knighton Town remain on course for the MMP Central Wales League (South) title despite dropping their first points of the season. After 19 wins from as many league games, The Radnor Robins saw their unblemished record dented after being held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Bont, who took a 4th-minute lead through Ethan Rees. Last season’s Aberystwyth & District League Champions, Bont then dug in to protect the lead and did so until the 82nd minute when Luke Boundford equalised. The game ended 10 versus 10 with Knighton’s Connor Bird and Bont goalkeeper, Trefor Jenkins sent off by referee, Aled Jones.

Elsewhere there were defeats for Builth Wells Reserves, Hay St Marys and Penybont United.

Builth were on the wrong end of a shock as they lost 4-3 at home against bottom of the table Llanidloes Town Reserves. Griffin Jolly gave the visitors an early lead which was cancelled out by Callum Jones.

Topscorer, Dave Thomas struck twice for The Bulls in the second half to seemingly put them on the road to victory but Finn Gaca and Keegan Bradley drew Llanidloes level before substitute, Aaron Macken netted in stoppage time to give The Daffs their first win of the season.

Penybont went down 2-0 at home against Machynlleth, whose Louis Roberts scored both goals in the opening 16 minutes. Having not played since November, Penybont were slow starters but grew into the game and were unfortunate not to have got at least one goal back.

Hay were away at Llanilar where they found themselves trailing to goals from Osian Simpson-Jones and Guto Roberts at half-time. Ricky Lynes raised their hopes by pulling one back but that was as good as it got for The Saints as Efan Wyn Jones, Ryan Hopkins (pen), Ioan Jones and Ryan Edwards added further scores for Llanilar.

Four Crosses are the new leaders in the MMP Central Wales League (North) after a crushing 9-0 victory over Llanfyllin Town with Will Howard and Jordan Dean both bagging hat-tricks. Ben Simms scored twice and Lewis Birch was also on target for Crosses who have played more games than their rivals.

Abermule were also among the goals with Michael Humphreys and Aron James each netting twice in a 7-1 win against Dyffryn Banw. James Stovell, Shayne Kelly and Adam Putson were also on the scoresheet with Joe Evans gaining Banw’s consolation.

In Saturday’s other league game, Montgomery Town and Barmouth drew 1-1 with Rob Griffith equalising for Barmouth after Jack Williams had handed Montgomery the lead.

MMP CENTRAL WALES LEAGUE CUP

Local interest in the MMP Central Wales League Cup disappeared with Rhayader Town and Presteigne St Andrews both suffering heavy defeats in the third round. Rhayader were away at Penparcau and despite being without key players, took an interval lead through Cameron Mills. Mikey Gornall levelled on 67 minutes before Gytis Pivnickas took centre stage with four goals in 12 minutes for Penparcau, who ran out 5-1 winners.

Presteigne were beaten 8-0 at home by Ffostrasol, who netted four in each half. Callum Shirt helped himself to a five-goal haul which included a first half hat-trick with Dafydd Phillips, Andrii Solyliak and Iolo Thomas completing the tally.

Berriew were another side to notch a big win as they beat Caersws Development 7-0, with Tomas Jones bagging four. Norton Collins, Sion Wilde, who was later sent off, and Jake Meredith also chipped in for The Rhiwsiders.

In the day’s top tie, Llanrhaeadr progressed 4-2 on penalties at Carno where it was 1-1 after 90 minutes, Will Roberts-Morris had given Llanrhaeadr the lead but Josh Hartrick forced a shoot out when keeper, Archie Jones emerged as Llanrhaeadr’s hero with two penalty saves.

Forden United eased to a 3-0 win over Tregaron with Jake O’Donnell and Ross Harris giving them a two-goal lead and Ben Roberts sealed it after Tregaron’s Melfyn Davies had seen red.

Lee Crumpler scored the all-important goal as Bow Street Reserves went through 1-0 at Bishops Castle and Welshpool Town won 4-2 at Tywyn Bryncrug. Max Matthews, Ricky Litchfield, Luke Thomas and an own goal saw Welshpool four up before Jacob Payne and Mark Edmondson reduced the deficit. Both sides ended with 10 men with Tywyn’s Ethan Rodgers and Sam Cadwallader of Welshpool both collecting second yellow cards.

In the one delayed second round tie, Trewern United triumphed 3-1 at Waterloo Rovers with goals from Calum Pain, Andrew Gwilt and Warren Roberts and will now face Machynlleth for the remaining place in the quarter-finals.

OTHER LEAGUES

Brecon FC stormed to a 10-1 victory over Black Lion FC in the RTM Brickwork Merthyr League with Tomos Morgan leading the way with four of the goals, Rhodri Powell-Jones and Owain Powell-Jones each netted twice with Sujan Limbu and Troy Hanniford taking Brecon into double figures.

There was no joy for Hay St Marys Reserves who were beaten 6-1 at Aberfan Rangers, with Tristan Platt netting their consolation.

Talgarth Town endured a disappointing afternoon in the Candour Talent Gwent Central League first division with a 2-0 defeat at Pilcs Reserves. Having beaten their opponents 6-0 at home, Talgarth were aiming for a double but a goal in each half from Ethan Stone and Kian Nightingale saw Pils win for only the second time this season.

Newcastle returned to winning ways in the JT Hughes Montgomery Amateur League with a 3-1 win at former Mid Wales League (South) rivals, St Harmon. The Swifts, who welcomed Dan Powell back after his stint with Radnor Valley, took the lead through Ollie Leadbetter but Morgan Oakley levelled and second half goals from Richard Williams and Tom Pope won it for the Shropshire men.

Felindre felt they were out of luck after slipping to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Kerry Reserves whose Liam Williams snatched a 92nd-minute winner. The Millers had twice led in the first half through James Reynolds and Justin Davies with Ryan Groves and Williams hitting back for Kerry.

Llandrindod Wells Reserves continue to find it tough giong and lost 4-0 at home to Forden United Reserves whose goals came from Dan McWhinnie (2), Harry Goffin and Ceejay Jones.

JD CYMRU (NORTH)

Builth Wells’ Tommy Rowlands and Llandrindod’s Ashley Jones both made an immediate impact on their debuts for Caersws in the Tier Two JD Cymru (North). The Bluebirds, who ended 2024 with four straight defeats, kicked off the New Year with a fantastic 2-0 victory over defending league champions, Holywell Town. Rowlands was brought down for a first-half penalty which was put away by Sam Phillips and netted the second goal himself on 65 minutes as well as hitting the bar with a super effort. Jones was named man-of-the-match after a dominant display in defence. Former Newtown academy captain, Iwan Smout also made his Caersws debut while Lyndon Jones, also formerly of Builth Wells, came on as a second half substitute.

Ruthin Town’s win on Friday night had left Penrhyncoch in the bottom three but they notched a vital 4-2 home success over Prestatyn Town to move out of the relegation places. Former Aberystwyth Town striker, Geoff Kellaway rolled back the years with a hat-trick and Daniel Owen was the other goalscorer as Penrhyn came from 2-1 down.

It was back-to-back defeats for Guilsfield however as goals from Jamie Hyne and Iwan Matthews could not prevent a 3-2 reversal at Denbigh Town.
