Brecon Corries bounced back from their disappointing defeat at Goytre in the Ardal South East league to grind out a 1-0 victory over Abergavenny Town on Saturday afternoon at the Rich Field.

Manager Damien Daniels and his assistant, Paul Burke, both watched on from behind the perimeter railing following their dismissals at Plough Road and were without Luke Roughley who was also suspended.

Following a relatively sedate start, it was the hosts who had the first opportunity when Craig Evans burst into the visitor's penalty area in the 10th minute but was denied by a well-timed challenge.

The Pennies responded in the 18th minute when Rhys Tandy saw his shot on the turn blocked.

Brecon Corries came close to breaking the deadlock within 60 seconds when Craig Evans headed narrowly wide of the far post from Joel Evans' free-kick.

Joel Evans had another chance to open the scoring soon afterwards but was unable to keep his header under the crossbar.

The hosts were now becoming the dominant force and it was turning into the Joel Evans show as the forward saw his 24th minute saved by Morris after being picked out by Paul Keddle.

It was then the turn of the former Merthyr Tydfil and Newtown forward to get in on the act as his shot on the turn was blocked.

Corries captain Dale Evans then denied former Builth Wells forward Rudi Griffiths with a well-timed challenge when played through on goal.

The Corries ended the half strongly as Joel Evans headed over the target before Craig Evans drove towards the penalty area three minutes later but fired his effort over.

Craig Evans was played through on goal in stoppage time but this time his effort went wide.

Corries manager Damien Daniels would have been pleased with the performance but disappointed they had not found the back of the net. The home team had been frustrated goalkeeper Morris and his well-organised defence.

But the home team did not appear to be too disappointed when they returned from the changing rooms as Biggs was played through on goal during the opening minute of the second-half but lost his footing at the vital moment.

Abergavenny Town then responded and Griffiths saw his shot saved from the edge of the area.

The longer the match went on, the greater the chance that the visitors had of claiming a point, as they looked to hit back on the break.

Griffiths was presented with a chance to put Abergavenny ahead but was unable to connect properly with a bouncing ball that dropped over his shoulder and his team were to ultimately pay for this missed opportunity.

The Corries' persistence eventually paid dividends when Joel Evans' glancing header nestled into the far corner of Morris' net after connecting with Craig Evans' cross pulled back from the byline.

There were a few nervous moments for Daniels and his players in the closing stages but they managed to keep a clean sheet and ultimately maintain third position in the table.
