D Welsh Cup

Builth Wells went into the hat for the draw for the JD Welsh Cup 2nd Qualifying Round after a 3-1 win at MMP Mid Wales League first division rivals, Llansantffraid Village. Having drawn at Llansantffraid in the league the previous week, Builth turned in a dominant second half showing to progress. The returning Tom Bethell had given them a half-time lead after combining with Mark Jones. Baile Autin levelled following a corner two minutes into the second half but then it was all Builth with Mark Jones putting them back in front before Bethell sealed the win with his second goal. Presteigne, Rhayader Town and Brecon Northcote are however out of the competition after failing to overcome the first hurdle.

Rhayader Town were kicking themselves after surrendering a two goal lead and missing a string of chances as they bowed out 3-2 at home gaianst Abermule. Rhayader raced into a two goal lead through Taylor Wozencraft and Jamie Evans, who netted his fourth in as many games. However errors gifted Abermule’s Warren Sherwood and Jack Weaver goals to leave it all square at half-time. Rhayader dominated the second half but missed chances to have killed the tie off and paid the price as Weaver popped up with an 88th minute winner for the visitors.Presteigne had selection problems for their trip to Borth United with a host of players unavailable. But manager, Shaun Harris felt his makeshift side gave a decent account of themselves before falling to a 2-0 defeat. Ryan Davies gave the hosts the lead with an audacious chip just after half-time and Guto Huws grabbed Borth’s second goal.

Brecon Northcote bowed out 5-0 at Newport City but were in the tie for a long time with the home side scoring four times in the final fifteen minutes.

Four Crosses eased past former Montgomery Amateur League rivals, Waterloo Rovers with Jake Edwards (2), Simon Griffith (2) and Jordan Gerrard netting in a 5-0 win while Dolgellau beat Churchstoke 5-2 at home. Dave Edwards scored twice with Jon Sutton, Aron Burrough and Kieran Jones completing the nap hand. Machynlleth caused an upset by winning their first game of the season 3-2 at Montgomery Town who themselves were previously unbeatem.

Builth’s reward for their win at Llansantffraid is an away tie at Berriew in the JD Welsh Cup second qualifying round. Llandrindod Wells are at home against Four Crosses while Radnor Valley also have home advantage against Carno.

Radnor Valley showed they can live with the big boys in the MMP Mid Wales League first division after pulling off a superb 3-2 victory at Llanidloes Town last Wednesday night. Following a goalless first half between two sides boasting one hundred per cent records, Radnor forged a three goal lead but had to endure a nervy last few minutes after The Daffs pulled two goals back.

Llanidloes had a first half effort ruled out for off-side when Harri Clarke headed in from a free-kick taken by former Knighton Town player-manager, Adam Worton but it was Radnor who made the all important breakthrough just minutes into the second half. Geraint Lloyd’s flick on played in Jack Williams who in turn fed Joey Price who beat a defender to fire home. Not long after it was two with Price netting his second from the penalty spot after being fouled in the box. Jack Williams extended the lead with a header after Llanidloes ‘keeper, Aaron Warwick had fumbled a Liam Jones cross. Peter Rees reduced the deficit after latching on to Josh Hartrick’s through ball and Connor Bird forced home a second, his eighth league goal of the term, on 84 minutes but Radnor withstood late pressure to bag a massive thee points.

The result meant Radnor were top of the table on Wednesday night with six wins from six but Caersws regained top spot on Saturday, albeit on goal difference, after a 6-0 home success over Llandrindod Wells. Mark Edmondson led the way with a hat-trick with the other goals coming from Jake Parr, Elliot Jones and Craig Harris.

Knighton Town’s troubled start to the season went on as The Robins crashed to a 9-0 home defeat at the hands of Berriew. There were two goals each for Joe Haycock, Calum Greatorex and Steffan Rogers with Ismail Ozdemir, Xavier Matisse and George Mitten adding to Knighton’s misery.

Llanfair United maintained their one hundred per cent record with a 4-1 home success over Bow Street. First half goals from Nathan Edginton and Josh Astley put Llanfair in control and two in three minutes from Toby Evans and Astley straight after half-time virtually settled the outcome before Bow Street pulled one back. MP Mid Wales League Division 2

Newbridge caused an early season upset in the MMP Mid Wales League second division with a 5-2 victory at Hay St Marys moving them level with The Saints at the top of the table. The Villagers were boosted by the return of five players who missed the previous week’s win at waterloo Rovers and a penalty from Aeron Powell and a goal from Ollie Woods gave them a two goal lead on Saturay. Hay hit back and were level at half-time through Matty Tong and Jack Biggs and they looked to be in the ascendancy at that stage. But Newbridge regained their composure and man-of-the-match, Woods went on to complete a hat-trick with Matty Meredith also netting to end Hay’s four match winning run. In the other second division match played last week, Montgomery Town remain the only unbeaten side and are up to second in the table after goals from Scott Williams, Alec Jones, Lee Evans and Jack Williams gave them a comfortable 4-0 home success against Machynlleth.

Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South)

Harry Sharman starred with a four goal haul as Talgarth Town made it three wins from three in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South) with a 5-0 victory over local rivals, Hay St Marys Reserves last Tuesday night. Sharman put Talgarth ahead and they added a second before half-time with Gavin Perry claiming the goal direct from a corner although it might well have gone in off a Hay defender. Sharman completed a second half hat-trick taking his personal tally to four as Talgarth go top of the early season table.

Presteigne Reserves have also made a bright start and new signing Terry Wiliams bagged a hat-trick in an 8-2 home verdict over arch rivals, Knighton Town Reserves. Ioan Hughes opened the scoring with his first touch after coming on an early substitute for Billy Hyett and Williams’ treble plus strikes from Jordan Griffiths and Tom Lewis made it 6-0 at half-time. After the break, Lewis struck again and Jack Brindley also netted, against his former side, before Knighton, who turned in a much improved second half showing, replied through Lucas Kirby and Ieuan Webb.

Llandrindod wells Reserves and Builth Wells Reserves played out a 2-2 on The Brodway with Daniel Walker salvaging a point for Builth with a second half penalty. Ryan Powel had given Builth the lead but Llandrindod turned it around with goals either side of half-time from Darren Murphy and Kieran Davies.

In midweek, Builth had edged a 3-2 home verdict against Brecon Northcote Reserves who were kicking off their season. Tom Morgan gave Northcote the lead but Josh Price levelled for Builth before half-time. Ewan Peel struck for Northcote in in the second half but player-manager, Darryl Wood equalised for Builth with a bullet like header before they grabbed a late winner when a low cross from Gethin Jarman was spilled into the net by the Northcote ‘keeper.

Rhys Evans grabbed a late winner as Llanidloes Town Reserves edged a 5-4 midweek thriller at Llandrindod Wells Reserves. Kai Evans and Rhys Evans put The Daffs two up but Llandrindod replied through Darren Murphy and Rob Doherty. Llanidloes regained their two goal advantage before half-time through Dan Richards and the other Rhys Evans but again the Spa men fought back. A second from Murphy and one from Connal Frane made it all square but Evans got the decisive goal to make it two wins from two for Llanidloes.

St Harmon will be disappointed at only managing a 2-2 draw at home against Penybont United after leading 2-0 at half-time. Adam Martin and a 25 yard effort from Tom Jones had put The Swifts ahead but Phil Ruell and Scott Davies hit back for Penybont

Penybont had league officials searching through the record books on Saturday as they dished out a 21-0 thrashing to ten man Knighton Town Reserves. Scott Davies and Ryan Lawrence each scored six while there were hat-tricks for Mike Teece and player-boss, Gavin Johnson with Jordan Parsons and Rory Brown completing the mauling.

There were also plenty of goals at Newcastle where the Shropshire men opened their campaign with an 8-1 success against Hay St Marys Reserves, who travelled with just nine men. Carl Price bagged five, Tom Bright had a brace and Matthew Jones was also on target with Joe Emmett responding for a depleted Saints.
