MMP MID WALES LEAGUE CUP
Builth Wells are through to the semi-finals of the MMP Mid Wales League Cup after winning a penalty shoot out at Aberaeron. Goalkeeper, Stuart Turpin emerged as the Builth hero not only by saving and scoring from the spot but it was he who forced extra-time with a stunning 90th minute equaliser.
Builth had found themselves two down at half-time with Ifan Burrell putting Aberaeron ahead following a goalmouth scramble. Steffan Gittins added a second from the penalty spot after Chris Roff brought down Burrell.
Builth had the wind behind them in the second half of what was a physical encounter and pulled one back ten minutes from time. Roff was fouled in the box and Josh Price scored at the second attempt after his original penalty was saved. Then just as Builth looked to be heading out, Turpin came up with his screamer. Making his way upfield for a corner, the ball fell to the goalkeeper, who took it on his chest and hit a half volley from 30 yards that flew into the net. Builth looked the more likely to win it in extra-time which produced no further score before they triumphed 7-6 in the penalty shoot out.
The big tie at The Recreation Ground saw Caersws progress with a 3-1 victory over local rivals, Llanidloes Town. Early goals from Craig Harris and Rhydian Davies had put The Bluebirds in the driving seat. Davies extended the lead with a second half penalty and Llanidloes then had a penalty themselves with Luke Evans saving from Connor Bird. Phil Jones hit the post for Caersws before Llanidloes, who were without the suspended Adam Worton, gained a late consolation through Bird.
Berriew eased through with a 7-0 home success against a depleted Welshpool Town on Friday night. Joe Haycock netted twice with Richard Davies, Charlie Humphreys, Harry Watkins, Steffan Rogers and Xavier Matisse completing an impressive tally.
Carno complete the semi-final line-up after winning 2-1 at MMP Mid Wales League second division leaders, Montgomery Town with goals from Jac Petrie and Richie Evans.
MMP MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 1
Radnor Valley recorded their first win in the MMP Mid Wales League first division since November with a crushing 6-0 home success over Llansantffraid Village. The Goats followed up their recent cup successes with a five star second half performance. Joey Price grabbed the only first half goal from a Matt Croose through ball. Croose again provided the assist for Elliot Morris to double the lead early in the second half. Lewis Morris netted from a corner to make it three and Joey Price then saw a penalty saved. Price did extend the lead with another spot kick and Matt Croose also converted a penalty before Ieuan Price completed the six heading in Adam Farmer’s cross from close range.
It was back to back defeats however for Llandrindod Wells who were beaten 2-0 at Bow Street. Both sides had chances but Bow Street took theirs with Tomos Williams netting twice while Llandrindod failed to find the net.
Elsewhere Llanfair United took the chance to close the gap on leaders, Llanidloes Town with a hard earned 3-2 home win against Kerry. Luke Mumford had opened the scoring for Kerry but his effort was cancelled out by Josh Astley before half-time. Ryan McVeagh put Llanfair ahead in the second half but an own goal three minutes from time had looked like earning Kerry a point until Karl Seliaerts popped up with a far post header in stoppage time.
MMP MID WALES LEAGUE DIVISION 2
Presteigne St Andrews produced their best performance of the season to notch a 6-1 victory at Newbridge in the MMP Mid Wales League second division. Ten games without a win since beating Aberystwyth University on October 30, Presteigne really did cause an upset with Tommy Murphy scoring four times in their first away win of the term.
Murphy put the visitors in front from the penalty spot when Ewan Rhodes was brought down. A Liam Tomkins own goal made it 1-1 and Newbridge then enjoyed a decent spell but Curtis Williams made two good saves. Murphy regained the lead for Presteigne with a free-kick over the wall and a deflected strike from Jamie Davies made it 3-1 at half-time.
Presteigne were hungry for goals in the second half and Murphy completed his hat-trick. Rhodes also got in on the act before Murphy completed a day to remember with his fourth.
Hay St Marys saw their promotion hopes dented suffering a 3-1 defeat at Four Crosses. The hosts were on a high after beating Welshpool Town in the Central Wales Cup the previous midweek and raced into a three goal lead inside 25 minutes through Jamie Evans (2) and Ben Simms. A change in formation led to a much improved second half performance from The Saints and they pulled one back when Brendan Hackett’s corner was flicked on by Jack Biggs with a Crosses defender heading into his own goal. But that first half deficit proved too much to claw back as Hay suffered their first league defeat since September.
Rhayader Town drew 2-2 at home against Dolgellau where wasted chances and poor defending cost them victory. Topscorer Jamie Evans and player-manager, Gareth Hughes twice gave Rhayader the lead but David Edwards and Sion Lloyd hit back for Dolgellau.
Abermule defeated Machynlleth 2-1 thanks to Dyfrig Rees and Tommy Jones while Dyffryn Banw were 4-1 winners at Aberystwyth University with goals from Jamie Huxley (2), Rhodri Jones and Alwyn Jones.
Waterloo Rovers and Borth United shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Borth, for the second week in a row, coming from two goals down. Michael Jones and Charlie Proctor had seen Rovers lead 2-0 at the break but Bryn Oliver and Guto Huws hit back for Borth.
WATSON FINANCIAL MID WALES LEAGUE (SOUTH)
Talgarth Town took a step closer to the Watson Financial Mid Wales (South) League title with a hard earned 3-1 victory in the local derby at Brecon Northcote. Looking to build on their biggest win of the season the previous week, Northcote started brightly and took the lead through Rhodri Boosey. Topscorer, Harry Sharman had Talgarth level before half-time and Joel Weale edged them in front with a fine free-kick before Alex Simmonds cut in from the right to seal the points.
Penybont United returned to winning ways with Scott Davies scoring twice in a 4-1 home success over Felindre. Ash Newton and new signing, Dan Farmer were also on target with Ieuan Thomas gaining a consolation for Felindre.
Newcastle head Penybont on goal difference in third spot in the table and the Shropshire side defeated Presteigne Reserves 4-1 at home. Carl Price (2), Sam Windsor and Matthew Jones shared the goals for the Shropshire men with Fin Oszoylu netting for Presteigne.
Llandrindod Wells Reserves built on their draw against leaders, Talgarth last time out with a 6-3 victory at St Harmon where a second half hat-trick from Adam Martin could not save The Swifts from defeat. Darren Murphy and Leroy Smith each scored twice for The Spa men with Tom Evans and Martin Rowan completing the six hit.
PIP SAMUEL( ELECTRICAL) MID WALES (SOUTH) LEAGUE CUP
Llanidloes Town maintained their recent form by becoming the first team to reach the semi-finals of this season’s Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales (South) League Cup. The in-form Daffs won 4-0 at Builth Wells Reserves with Gregg Brown leading the way with a brace while Adrian Foulkes and James Coleman were also on target.
Llanidloes will now be at home against either Presteigne Reserves or Hay St Marys Reserves in the semi-finals. In the other side of the draw, Penybont United or Brecon Northcote will meet either Talgarth Town or Llandrindod Wells Reserves.
CENTRAL WALES CUP
Radnor Valley and Builth Wells received differing fortunes in the draw for the quarter finals of this season’s Central Wales Cup. Radnor, who have already knocked out both Guilsfield and Caersws, are at home against MMP Mid Wales League first division rivals, Carno. Builth are away at either Llanrhaeadr or Talgarth Town, who contest the remaining place on Sunday. Elsewhere, Berriew host Bow Street while Four Crosses will be at home against Llanidloes Town.
Crosses booked their place with an impressive 3-0 at Welshpool Town thanks to two goals from Ben Simms plus a Kyle Wilson free-kick.
Llanidloes Town progressed with a 2-1 home verdict over Llanfair United last Wednesday night. George Clarke had put Llanidloes ahead but Karl Seliaerts levelled before half-time. Gareth Owen got, what proved to be, the winner early in the second half although The Daffs had to play the last ten minutes a man short after former Knighton Town player-manager, Adam Worton picked up a second yellow card.
The full Central Wales Cup quarter final draw, with ties to take place on or before March 10 is:
Berriew v Bow Street, Four Crosses v Llanidloes Town, Llanrhaeadr or Talgarth Town v Builth Wellls, Radnor Valley v Carno
nBrecon Corries lost ground in the Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance Premier Division title race after a 4-0 reverse at Cefn Cribwr BC. The Corries travelled to Bridgend one point and one place behind their hosts and just five off leaders Ynyshir Albions.
