Talgarth town suffered a heavy defeat in the Emrys Morgan Cup but there were league wins for Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader Town over the weekend.
It was a successful day for our three local teams in the Ardal League North East with home wins for Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader Town.
Builth led the way with a fine 2-0 success over high flying Bow Street with a goal in each half from summer signings, Jamie Evans and Lyndon Jones. Jamie Evans gave The Bulls an early lead with a 25-yard strike after latching on to a clearance from goalkeeper, Zeke Vivian. Evans hit the bar on the half hour but it was a tight affair and Builth had to defend well despite losing captain Chris Roff with a nasty head injury.
Builth again defended well in the second half and always looked dangerous on the break and Lyndon Jones secured the points with a lovely free-kick fifteen minutes from time.
Rhayader Town hauled themselves off the bottom by beating Llangollen Town 1-0 on The Weirglodd thanks to former Knighton Town player-manager Mark Jones, who bagged the only goal on 20 minutes.
Having not played the previous week, Rhayader looked a little rusty but they ground out a result. That one moment of magic from Jones lit up an otherwise low key affair on The Weirglodd to earn The Red Kites three much needed points.
Llandrindod were without key men Ashley Jones and Jack Evans for the visit of Welshpool Town but they pulled off a 2-1 victory to extend their recent unbeaten run to four.
Tom Durant gave the Spa men an interval lead and Danny Hall added a second after the break but Llandrindod had to endure a few anxious late moments after Ethan Kinsey reduced the deficit.
Joe Cook grabbed the winner as Caersws notched an excellent 3-2 win at previous leaders, Cefn Albion. Norton Collins gave The Bluebirds the lead but Chris Budrys levelled in first half stoppage time. Alex Williams then put Albion in front but Luke Evans equalised from the penalty spot before 16-year-old substitute Cook made a name for himself.
Llanfair United are now top after reeling off a seventh straight win. Goals from Ryan McVeagh (2), Matt Spencer and Richard Davies secured a 4-1 win at Llanuwchllyn while Dolgellau are up to third with Gerwyn Williams bagging a hat-trick in a 5-2 verdict against Penycae.
It was back-to-back league defeats for Brecon Corries who suffered a 3-1 reversal at Abertillery Bluebirds who are the new leaders in the Ardal League South East.
But Damien Daniels’ side gave a good account of themselves with a third Bluebirds goal deep into stoppage time finally settling the game.
An early goal from Ryan Meredith put the hosts ahead but Corries battled their way back with captain, Dale Evans equalising eight minutes into the second half. Tom Beynon restored Abertillery’s lead from the penalty spot on 78 minutes and it was Beynon who struck again late on to seal the points.
After three away games, Corries return to The Rich Field this weekend when they host Ynysygerwen in the Ardal South League Cup.
Matty Tong scored four times as Hay St Marys maintained top spot in the Central Wales League South with an 8-0 victory at Penybont United.
Tong helped himself to a first half hat-trick, his third goal coming in first half stoppage time. The striker took his personal tally to four on the hour after being set up by substitute Liam McAnally. And McAnally then scored twice and fellow substitute, Craig Jones also bagged a double as Hay won at a canter.
Llanilar are second in the table after winning 4-2 at Radnor Valley whose title hopes suffered a setback as they lost for the first time in the league.
Radnor were always going to have to dig deep without a host of key players but they looked on course for the spoils with first half goals from Callum Matthews and Ieuan Price.
Trystan Evans reduced the deficit for Llanilar on the hour but it was the introduction of Osian Simpson-Jones from the bench that made all the difference. He netted twice in as many minutes before another substitute, Chris Jones chipped in meaning no way back for Radnor.
Knighton Town had dropped their first league points of the season in a 2-2 draw with visiting Aberystwyth University last Monday night.
The students went ahead following a corner when Alex Dutton-Johnson headed in although Knighton protested that the ball had not crossed the line but Gareth Bull had The Robins level by half-time. Kieran Dovey got off the bench to fire Knighton ahead on 70 minutes but Matthew Howells netted a second for the College side.
Knighton Town returned to winning ways at the week-end to book a place in the fourth round of the Emrys Morgan Cup with a 6-0 win against visiting Talgarth Town.
Kieran Dovey was the star of the show with a four goal haul with Jack Davies and a Martyn Norwood own goal completing the tally while Steve Faux also missed a peanlty for the Radnor Robins.
Radnor Valley, semi-finalists last season, hope to join Knighton in the last sixteen when they meet Builth Wells Reserves on Saturday but Presteigne St Andrews are out of the competition following a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Tegaron.
In the second of three successive meetings with Tregaron, Presteigne were three down at half-time to goals from Dylan Davies and Jason Jones (2). But they turned in a much improved second half showing restricting Tregaron to just one further goal with Jones completing his hat-trick.
Penparcau recorded the biggest win of the day romping to a 10-0 success at Welshpool Town Reserves where former Aberystwyth Town legend, Tommy Morgan got off the bench to bag a hat-trick.
Llansantffraid Village were one of the favourites for the competition but went out 3-2 at Machynlleth with Calum Humphreys snatching a last minute winner, his second of the tie. Tom Evans also netted for Mach with Liam Jones and Iain Edmunds scoring for Llansantffraid.
Tom Evans and Robbie Hartshorn each netted twice as Montgomery Town won 6-3 at Trewern United and Luke Mumford was another two goal man as Kerry came from behind to beat Llangedwyn 3-1 at home.
Sam Morgan grabbed a last minute winner as Felindre edged out Hay St Marys Reserves with a 4-3 verdict in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South).
Hay will be disappointed as they slipped to their first defeat of the term after surrendering a two-goal lead.
Harry Gilbert and Scott Warren struck early for The Saints but Felindre were back on terms by half-time through Jacob Meredith and Lyndon Bevan.
Ieuan Davies-Foster then put Felindre in front three minutes after the break but Darren Horrigan levelled midway through the half. And Hay must have thought they had done enough to go home with a point when substitute, Morgan netted right at the end poking in following a corner to take Felindre top of the table.
The Millers take over from St Harmon who went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Newcastle.
Matthew Jones got the all important goal for the Shropshire men from the penalty spot after 12 minutes and Newcastle are now the one unbeaten side in the league although they have only played two league games.
Builth Wells slipped to their first defeat of the season in the FAW National Reserve League Central beaten 3-1 at Llanidloes Town on Friday night.
Both sides went into the clash boasting one hundred per cent records and it was Mason Jones who gave Llanidloes, the defending League Champions, the lead at the start of the second half.
Blake Evans, who has scored in every game for Builth this time, levelled for The Bulls but Rhys Evans put The Daffs ahead again before topscorer, Jones netted his second.
