There was plenty of action across mid Wales football last weekend, with penalty shoot-out drama, a goalkeeper scoring and several red cards the points of note.

Llandrindod Wells are through to the 3rd Round of the FAW Amateur Trophy after beating arch rivals, Builth Wells on penalties after the sides were locked together at 3-3 after 90 minutes.

It was billed as the local tie of the round and did not disappoint with goals, penalties and red cards in what was certainly one of the games of the season.

Danny Hall gave Llandrindod an early lead following a goalmouth melee but Builth levelled straight away with a stunning 25 yard strike from Tommy Rowlands.

Chris Roff then headed Builth in front from a Rowlands corner at the near post while Llandrindod missed the chance to level when Jack Evans saw his penalty saved by new goalkeeper Zeke Vivian following a foul by Ryan Powell.

Llandrindod were awarded a second penalty eleven minutes into the second half and Evans this time made no mistake after Alex Hicks was sent off for pulling back Robbie Nicholls.

Evans converted another penalty when Will Cleaton was adjudged to have handled and it became ten a side when Llandrindod’s Danny Hall saw red. And Builth made their extra man count with Olivier Derikoye grabbing his first goal for The Bulls when he claimed the final touch following Rowlands’ injury time corner.

It went straight to penalties with Llandrindod just holding their nerve to sneak through 3-2 with Stuart Williams converting the winning spot-kick.

Rhayader Town also progressed but were made to work all the way for their passage by Tregaron who eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat on the Weirglodd.

Tai Jones saw his 12th minute opener for The Red Kites soon cancelled out by Ryan Davies. Grant Stamp, who looks to be a big signing for manager, Dylan McPhee, regained Rhayader’s lead in the second half and James Thomson added a third for the hosts but Tregaron refused to throw in the towel and Ryan Hurrell netted to keep their hopes alive.

Brecon Corries and Knighton Town bowed out, Corries going down 4-2 at Abertillery Bluebirds who took an early lead through Danny Hillman.

A Jamie Russell own goal had Corries level but Corey Mitchell put Bluebirds back in from from the penalty spot.

Austin Mellor tied the scores with his first goal of the season but a second penalty from Mitchell had the hosts ahead again by half-time.

Craig Evans missed the third penalty of the tie after Abertillery’s Russell had seen red and that was possibly the tie’s turning point as Ryan Meredith added a fourth for Abertillery while Corries were themselves reduced to ten with Nathan Williams sent off in stoppage time.

Knighton have made a good start to the season but crashed out 9-0 at Bow Street who have a number of players who were playing in Tier Two last season.

And this showed as The Robins never recovered after conceding two early goals to Ifan Burrell and John James. Burrell went on to score four while Sion Ewart, Ryan Evans, Tomos Roberts and Richie Ricketts were also on target for Bow street.

Other Mid Wales teams to progress along with Llandrindod, Rhayader and Bow Street were Caersws, Llanfair United, Llansantffraid Village and Welshpool Town. Goals from Richard Davies, Nyasha Mwamuka and Ben Jones saw Llanfair come from two down to triumph at FC Queens Park while Llansantffraid Village, from the Central Wales League North, enjoyed one of the best results of the day beating Llanuwchllyn on penalties after the teams ended goalless with goalkeeper, Rhys Jones emerging as the hero.

Josh Lenc scored twice and further goals from Ricky Litchfield, Ethan Kinsey and Ryan Knott gave Welshpool Town a 5-1 win at Ruabon Rovers while Craig Harris (2) and Glynn Coney netted for Caersws in their 3-1 success at Flint Mountain.

Hay St Marys suffered a setback in their MMP Central Wales League South campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Machynlleth.

The Saints were looking to bounce back from their Emrys Morgan Cup exit the previous week but slipped to their first league defeat of the term. Captain Liam McAnally gave Hay the lead on 18 minutes from a Jack Biggs through ball but Mach were level two minutes later through a Callum Page penalty.

Page struck again right on the 45-minute mark and Hay conceded again in first half stoppage time with former Welsh Premier League striker, Luke Borelli pouncing when The Saints gave the ball away.

Jack Biggs reduced the deficit five minutes into the second half after being put clear by Rob Sneddon and Hay sensed they could get at least a point and had their chances but manager, Gareth Jenkins was left to rue defensive errors which in the end proved costly.

Hay remain top of the table but Radnor Valley are now just a point behind with two games in hand after their 4-2 victory over Aberaeron at The Bypass.

The visitors, who travelled with a bare eleven, made Radnor work hard in the first half with just a Geraint Lloyd goal separating the sides at the break.

Taylor Wozencraft doubled the lead from the penalty spot two minutes in to the second half and when he scored a second, it looked game over.

Aberaeron however staged a spirited reply with goals from Ryan Jenkins and Dafydd Roberts before Charlie Beaumont ended their comeback with Radnor’s fourth.

Penybont United made a welcome return to action, with the first of five successive home games, and an inexperienced line-up fell to a heavy 10-0 defeat against Llanilar.

Osian Simpson-Jones and Jamie Stuart each scored twice while Rob Preiser, Morgan Roberts-Young, Ryan Hopkins, Sion Edwards, Kieron Reynolds and Ioan Jones took Llanilar into double figures.

Henry Shaw scored twice and goalkeeper, Jordan Bailey was also on target as Presteigne St Andrews booked their place in the 3rd Round of the Emrys Morgan Cup with a 3-2 win at St Harmon.

It was The Swifts who drew first blood with Geraint Mathias giving them a deserved lead midway through the first half. Shaw netted his double early in the second half when Presteigne had the wind behind them to turn the tie around and Bailey netted from inside his own half. Mathias grabbed his second from the penalty spot for St Harmon but it was too late to affect the outcome.

Elsewhere in the Emrys Morgan Cup, Aberystwyth University opened their term with a 4-0 victory over Lampeter Town and Bishops Castle were 3-0 winners over Churchstoke. Four Crosses triumphed 3-0 at Carno. The original tie was abandoned the previous week following an injury to Carno’s Sam Hamer. Carno were leading 3-1 at the time but it was Crosses who held the upper hand in the replay with goals from Rhys Owen, Billy Clarke and Will Howard.

Felindre opened their new pitch in style with a 7-1 success against Presteigne St Andrews Reserves in the Watson Financial Mid Wales League (South).

The club and community have worked so hard to develop the new ground and The Millers won for the first time this season with Ieuan Davies-Foster and James Reynolds giving them a 2-0 interval lead in front of a bumper crowd. There was no way back for Presteigne after Jake Reynolds and Ieuan Thomas each scored twice after the break. Callum Walker pulled a goal back for Presteigne, who were not as bad as the scoreline suggests, but it was Felindre’s day with Tom Griffiths taking them into seventh heaven.

The first round draw for the new inter league competition, the Mid Wales League (South)/Montgomeryshire League Cup was made recently and Mid Wales (South) sides, Hay St Marys Reserves, Presteigne St Andrews and St Harmon received home draws while Felindre and Newcastle are away. The draw, with ties to be played on Saturday October 22 is:- Hay St Marys Res v Four Crosses Res, Llangedwyn v Felindre, Presteigne St Andrews Res v Churchstoke, St Harmon v Llanfechain Trefonen v Newcastle Byes: Abermule Res, Llanfyllin Town Res, Waterloo Rovers Res

Llanidloes Town maintained their one hundred per cent record in the FAW National Reserve League Central with a 5-1 win at Welshpool Town.

Harri Clarke, Mason Jones, Will Denham, Jensen Jones and Rhys Evans netted for The Daffs with Owain Richards gaining Welshpool’s consolation. Dolgellau defeated Penrhyncoch 6-2 thanks to Harri Davies (2), Dominic Thomas (2), Joe Ephraim and an Isaac Hill own goal with Zac Davies and Eddie Rhodes netting late replies for Penrhyn.

Elsewhere it was another frustrating weekend for Builth Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Rhayader Town who again found themselves kicking their heels.
