THREE Brecon and Radnorshire teams are in the first round proper of the JD Welsh Cup this weekend with two ties at home.

The tie of the round locally is likely to be at School Lane, New Radnor where Radnor Valley, who are currently second in the MMP Mid Wales League Division One, face Goytre FC from Welsh League Division One.

The other tie being played locally on Saturday is at the Broadway, Llandrindod Wells where the Mid Wales League Division One side face Aberbargoed Buds, from Welsh League Division Two.

Both sides play at tier three in the Welsh pyramid so the fixture is likely to provide an intriguing comparison between the strengths of the Mid Wales Division One and Division Two of the Welsh League.

Radnor Valley are currently third in Mid Wales Division One, with games in hand, and had been the surprise leaders in September. The Goats face higher level opposition as Goytre are just one division below the Welsh Premier League.

Radnor joint manager Paul Morgan is hoping the basic facilities at School Lane will unsettle the visitors.

He said: "Our facilities are not the best and in theory perhaps that will go in our favour a little bit if they are used to playing at a higher level with better facilities. Hopefully it will give them a bit of a knock in confidence to see our place.

" We will be mindful they have a lot more experience and quality than us, they can pay players, but perhaps they’ll turn up at Radnor Valley, expect better facilities and when they walk across that sheep field their heads will probably drop."

Goytre, who are based in Penperlleni, near Pontypool, are managed by Sean Wharton, the former Sunderland and Hereford midfielder who won the inaugural Welsh Premier title, then known as the League of Wales, with Cwmbran Town in 1992/93.

One of his former teammates from that historic team, who became the first Welsh club to compete in the Champions League qualifiers, will be in charge of Sully Sports who host Brecon Corries.

Manager Jimmy Blackie’s Sully Sports side are familiar opponents to the Corries, both teams play in the Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance Premier Division and will know Saturday’s tie will guarantee one of the tier five sides a place in Monday’s round two draw.

All three games kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday, October 20.
