BRECON ladies’ hockey team made a positive start to the New Year on Saturday, claiming their first win of the season against Gowerton at their home pitch of Penlan.

Sporting their new kit (sponsored by James Dean Estate Agents and Select Security Specialists’) the girls were keen to start the second half of the season on a high.

Having the advantage of a home game meant the sideline was full of Brecon supporters which added enthusiasm and energy to spark the girls eagerness for victory.

From the whistle, Brecon applied pressure to Gowerton, driving the ball into the attacking circle repeatedly.

A penalty corner was awarded for their efforts, meaning the girls had the opportunity to put their set plays into practice.

A direct strike on goal from Emily James missed by inches, but the home team were not deterred.

Gowerton (placed fifth in the league table) fought back with fierceness, and with skills and speed broke through the Brecon defence to place a direct strike at goal.

Megan Thomas (Brecon goalkeeper) managed to react quickly and saved the first attempt, but a well positioned forward managed to claim the rebound.

This left the half time score as 1-0 to Gowerton.

Having the advantage of a full squad and fresh legs, Brecon started the second half strong, again winning a penalty short corner. Emily James took a direct strike at goal and scored, taking the game to a 1-1 draw.

Knowing the importance of winning the game and adding a much needed three points to the league table, Brecon dug deep, determined to claim another goal. Their break came from a pass from midfield to Olivia Mills on the right wing. Olivia passed the ball across the circle to her sister, Hannah Mills who skilfully used her reverse stick to slam the ball past the goalie.

The score was now 2-1 to Brecon with 15 minutes to go!

The game continued to be tense and entertaining for the spectators, with Gowerton keeping Brecon on edge to the final whistle.

A short corner was awarded to Gowerton with less than 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

Brecon’s defence held strong, determined to come home with the win.

It was a relief and celebration for Brecon when the final whistle blew, confirming a 2-1 win to Brecon.

Brecon’s man of the match was awarded to goal keeper Megan Thomas, for her sterling and solid performance in defence.

With another 11 games to play this part of the season (eight of which being home games) the girls are keen for to continue the standard of play demonstrated on Saturday to add a few more wins to the league table.
