On a misty November afternoon Brecon snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with an incredible last-gasp win against visitors Llangennech.
Brecon 24 - Llangennech 22
It proved a close contest between two very good teams, with the result hanging in the balance right up to the final whistle.
Yet, with 10 minutes of the match remaining the game seemed to have been decided. When Llangennech wing, Luke Davies, on his own five-metre line, intercepted what should have been a Brecon scoring pass, he raced, unchallenged, the length of the field, to score a try which outside half Steff Marshall converted. This gave the visitors a 12-point lead with just nine minutes remaining.
Certainly, the heads and hearts of Brecon’s touchline support drooped. But the coaching team had greater belief, as did the players who lifted their game and produced their best rugby of the afternoon. With four minutes remaining Matthew Williams scored and James Dixon converted.
Brecon were now not to be denied and with the final play Lewis Jones crossed for a try which Dixon converted to give Brecon a remarkable victory.
The game throughout had been a tight affair with fortunes swinging both ways.
After six minutes Brecon took the lead with a 45-metre Dixon penalty.
Both sides then had periods of pressure, but it wasn’t until the 25th minute that the next score was posted.
This time it was the turn of the visitors to take the lead, with hooker Callum Jenkins driving over from a maul.
Brecon hit back with a try of their own through hooker Rhys Williams. Dixon converted to take a five-point lead into the half-time break.
The second half started with Llangennech having a long period of territorial pressure. But Brecon’s defence was outstanding and finally Llangennech took the pragmatic option and reduced the deficit with a Marshall penalty.
Brecon responded but the Llangennech defence held out and they poached a try to take the lead.
Brecon were now five points down with 20 minutes to play.
James Dixon made a break but was ankle tapped just short of the line. An accurate pass to wing Chad Davies was all that was needed. Instead, the pass was intercepted and the rest was history, as first Llangennech claimed their 12-point lead, before great work between flankers Ioan Edwards and Matthew Williams led to the Williams try.
With time running out Jack Dixon made inroads and Brecon had their final chance of a penalty on five metres. They opted for a scrum which advanced, and the score was only prevented when the ball was kicked out. That earned another penalty and a yellow card.
At the next scum, the coolest head of all those at Parc de Pugh was scrum half Lewis Jones. As the ball reached the feet of James Roberts, Jones saw that the opposition back row was focussed on holding the Brecon drive. Jones reacted brilliantly and broke past the despairing defenders to score a try to bring the scores level and for Dixon to convert, to seal a remarkable win.
