Girls’ rugby was at the centre of the community recently, with more than 400 girls taking part in the annual Red Kites girls’ rugby festival at Gwernyfed RFC.
The festival had been on hold since Covid brought it to an end, but the Red Kites welcomed teams from all across Wales to take part in the day once again.
Teams travelled from as far as Aberaeron to be part of the day, with teams from U8s all the way to U14s competing.
The girls hub has continued to grow from strength to strength and this season has been the home to girls from U8 all the way up to U16, providing them with an outlet to play rugby.
The Red Kites U14s team celebrated the end of another successful season by winning the WRU Plate Competition.
There was further cause for celebration as two former Red Kites players, Tilly Vucaj and Shanelle Williams, also went on to represent Wales in the U18s Six Nations.
The event was a great celebration for women’s rugby and boasted a record-breaking attendance.
Gwernyfed’s senior ladies team lent a hand with the running of the day.
Support from local businesses such as Llanfaes Dairy and Alpaca My Boots was also much appreciated.
Ceri Morgan, Red Kites Hub Lead, was thrilled with the success of the event.
“Having been Hub Lead of the Red Kites since 2016 it's a proud moment to see so many girls playing rugby here today and to see these older girls fulfilling their dreams - such an achievement,” she said.
“Enjoy every minute - I am sure there's so much more to come.”
