WERNYFED travelled to Llandaff and came away with a narrow victory despite edging most areas of the game.
The overnight rain made for a sticky game and within minutes the away side slotted a penalty by Gerwyn Williams quickly followed up by another longer effort by centre Gareth Dodds.
The score remained until shortly before halftime as the home ten slotted a penalty and from the restart the ball went dead and the reset on the halfway line saw the home side after several forward drives pinch a try under the posts which went converted.
As the game progressed Gwernyfed took better control of the game. Midfield paring Dodds and young newcomer Haydyn Murphy were uncompromising in defence all day pressurising their opponents.
Young fullback Jack Williams fielded the slippery ball with ease and returning back row man Ben Barrel made an impression throughout the game.
As the game entered the final quarter, the ever hardworking Gwernyfed forwards pressed and scrum half Gareth East spotted a blind side option and slick passing saw Murphy put left winger Andy Hill in for a try sprinting over in the corner with Williams slotting the extra points to take the lead 13-10.
With the away support anxious for the cushion of extra points when Hill seemingly gathered a well placed kick into the in goal area there was much angst when the referee saw different.
With a good 10 minutes of injury time played, Gwernyfed with substitute Jonny Davies controlling the line-out kept their nerve for a very well deserved victory against a dogged home side. Final score 10-13.
With the youth being dropped off in neighbouring Pentyrch the Gwernyfed youngsters continued their great start to the season with a 15-5 friendly victory against the Cardiff side.
Having played against a very good Merthyr Youth side the previous week and only losing narrowly in the last quarter the seeds of the future are clear to be seen.
This was further emphasised with the Gwernyfed minis and junior sections also having taken home silverware this last couple of weeks.
More importantly it has been extremely impressive to have seen hundreds of boys and girls across the Breconshire and Radnorshire Region starting and enjoying another season in such big numbers, a credit to all involved in the grass roots game.
