GWERNYFED Athletic traveled to Caldicot and secured a vital 43-29 win, scoring seven tries to the home team’s five.
This looks like earning them the Gwent, Newport & Pontypool, League’s division one title as Risca, their only rivals and league winners for the last six seasons, appear to be running out of days to play their outstanding fixtures in order to erode the eight point lead of the Powys team.
In glorious sunshine, the match saw the two teams slug it out as they traded tries throughout the game but, with the lead changing six times, Gwernyfed eventually pulled away in the last quarter to secure the hard earned victory.
Starring for Gwernyfed, as they have all season, were number eight Tom Powell, with a hat-trick of tries, and Gareth Dodd, whose powerful running from centre caused major problems for Caldicot throughout the game.
This allowed Gwernyfed to make the most of the possession from a forward pack that dominated their opponents in the set scrum throughout the game.
With tries coming thick and fast for both teams, Powell’s trio was supplemented by two for winger Jules Tunnicliffe, adding to a couple of trademark big hits on his opposite number, while captain Barry Price and veteran flanker John Davies also crossed the whitewash.
