Ysgol Calon Cymru’s magical journey to the U18 Vase Final came to a climax this afternoon at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

This is the first year that the school, which has campuses in Builth and Llandrindod, has entered the Welsh Schools Rugby Union league system at U18 level.

A strong band of supporters had made the journey down from mid Wales and got behind the boys from the first whistle.

Ysgol Calon Cymru gave a good account of themselves on the day, but came up short as Swansea’s Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr triumphed 46-12.

The Swansea team enjoyed a lightning fast start to the game, scoring two quick tries through dangerous scrum half Cai Gealy.

Ysgol Calon Cymru soon hit back with a try of their own through Tom Evans. After putting their Swansea opponents under a period of sustained pressure with several quickly taken penalties, Badyn Powell ran a powerful line to move his team to within five metres, before quick movement off the fringe of the ruck allowed Evans to squeeze over.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr quickly responded however by scoring their third try just before the break. A solid scrum was followed by good work by full back Harrison Lloyd, before Joseff Walters was released and crossed to score.

The mid Wales boys had a chance to get a second try just before the break as they probed their opponent's defensive line, but the ball was lost, and they went in a half time trailing by 5 points to 19.

In the second half Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr came out quickly once again and soon scored their fourth try of the afternoon, this time out wide by Osian Fitzgerald-Davies. The conversion drifted wide.

Ysgol Calon Cymru’s Elliot Owen was shown a yellow card for a high tackle shortly afterwards.

After a period of sustained pressure, Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr won a penalty inside Ysgol Calon Cymru’s 22. They opted to kick the points and the penalty was slotted over to make it 5-27.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr’s Geeley then scored his third try to secure his hat-trick.

Geeley, proving a constant thorn in the side of Ysgol Calon Cymru, soon crossed for his fourth score, and his side’s sixth. The scrum half was on sparkling form and caused all sorts of problems for his opponents with quick distribution and darting runs off the fringes of the ruck. The try was converted to take the score to 5-41.

The game was running away from Ysgol Calon Cymru but the team showed great character to wrestle back some possession and territory as the game entered its final stages.

They were justly rewarded for their efforts with an instinctive try from Iwan Holder. Ciaran Price then knocked over the kick to bring the score to 12-41.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr had the last say in the match however, when outside centre Lewis Edwards finished off a slick move to score their seventh try.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr were deserved winners on the day and were clinical with their finishing, finding the try line on many occasions when entering their opponent’s 22.

Ysgol Calon Cymru showed great heart and can take pride in not only the results they achieved to reach this stage, but the performance they gave in this final, leaving it all out on the pitch.
