The Co-op store in Talgarth fell victim to a ram raid this morning which saw its cash machine burgled.

Police were called to the Hay Road store at around 3am today (Tuesday) following the incident.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Sometime between 2.55am and 3.05am this morning (Tuesday, June 17, 2024) the ATM was removed from outside the building.

“Three vehicles and the ATM have since been recovered.”

No arrests have been made at this time.

Specialist officers, including drone operators and dog handlers, and National Police Air Service helicopters have been assisting with enquiries.

Police remain at the scene where house-to-house, CCTV, and other enquiries are ongoing.

Local people have reported a police presence in areas including Llyswen, Llandefalle and Felinfach.

There are no reports of any injuries from the raid.

The front of the shop sustained serious damage, which is likely to close the store for some time.

Anyone with information that could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to Dyfed-Powys Police, either online, through a direct message on social media, or by calling 101.

Commenting on the incident, Talgarth County Councillor William Powell told the B&R: “While there is shock in the local community at these violent events, it is a mercy that no-one was injured in the raid. Clearly, there will be major consequences for the local population without access to the shop and its services for some time to come.'

“However, for now my thoughts are with the Coop Store Manager, Will Lloyd and his staff as they come to terms with this, as well as to the residential neighbours, some of them elderly, who were so rudely awaken in the small hours by this criminal act. In addition, there was some apprehension from Ysgol y Mynydd Du pupils as they passed by on their way to school this morning.

“Special praise is due to Dyfed-Powys Police for their swift response with dog patrols, drone technology and the deployment of the NPAS Police Helicopter. The criminals involved in this outrage need to be detained and must feel the full force of the law, for what they have done to our peaceful and special community.”

The Hay Road Co-op is a reasonably new store, having opened just last September following its relocation.
