A village post office is set to close its doors for good next month and will not be replaced.
Abercraf (Abercrave) Post Office will close at 11am on Tuesday, January 14.
This closure is due to the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use.
The Post Office says they have conducted a “comprehensive review” of the network and have decided that the branch will not be replaced at this time.
A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause.
“We hope that our customers will continue to use Post Office services and alternative Post Office branches.”
The spokesperson added that there is a full-time Post Office in Ystradgynlais, which is around 2.5 miles away. There is also a part-time mobile Post Office at Ynyswen on Monday afternoon, which is closer.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have warned that the closure could spark a 'fierce backlash' from local residents, given they already do not have a local bank and a request for a banking hub in Ystradgynlais put in by the party was rejected with the presence of Abercraf Post Office used as part of the justification for the decision.
David Chadwick, MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe said: “We already know that people in Abercraf are already struggling without access to a high street bank and I know countless people who will be extremely upset about the planned closure of Abercraf Post Office, which will only further minimise access to cash in the local community.”
Jane Dodds, MS for Mid and West Wales added: “Post offices are right at the heart of our communities and need to be protected.
“This planned closure cannot be allowed to go ahead and for people in Abercraf to be left without a vital service.”
