Brecon Festival Ballet is set to return to the Theatr Brycheiniog stage over a four-day period this December.

Back in December 2019, the popular ballet put on five performances of The Nutcracker at The Brecon, quickly selling out all of the shows. It was the first time a full-scale classical production of The Nutcracker had ever been created in Wales and it was also the first time that Theatr Brycheiniog had ever presented a classical ballet with a live orchestra.

The ballet was due to return to Theatr Brycheiniog for Christmas 2020, although after the pandemic struck, the group were forced to cancel all performances scheduled for last year.

Katy Sinnadurai BEM, Artistic Director for Brecon Festival Ballet, said: “It’s been a challenging time for those who work in the performing arts and for audiences who have missed out on seeing shows that uplift, inspire and entertain – so important to keep our spirits up during difficult times.

“That’s why Brecon Festival Ballet is so delighted to be back this year! We’re presenting a Covid-friendly production called ‘Christmas Treats from the Nutcracker’, featuring 15 fantastic professional dancers in highlights from the Nutcracker, but there will also be a selection of solos and ensemble pieces from other famous ballets and appearances from 27 local, talented children.”

Giving local dance students the unique opportunity of performing alongside the professionals is one of Brecon Festival Ballet’s key aims as a charity, and this year’s group of children are very excited to have this chance. Once again, behind the scenes, many local people are involved in the making of costumes, props and scenery.

Of their 15 professional dancers, 10 live in Wales, including five that originally trained here in Brecon, so the group are rightfully very proud to showcase local professional performers.

This festive treat for all the family runs from December 16-19, which also includes a relaxed and distanced matinee performance on Sunday December, 19.
