Brecon Cathedral will host a special performance of J.S. Bach’s St John Passion on Saturday, April 12, at 7:30 pm.
Brecon Singers, conducted by the acclaimed Robert Evans, will be joined by professional and internationally renowned soloists and accompanied by the Bannau Brycheiniog Chamber Orchestra. The evening promises a moving and dramatic retelling of one of the greatest choral works ever written.
First performed in 1724 at St Nicholas Church in Leipzig, St John Passion is the earliest of Bach’s surviving Passion settings. Written in two parts, it was originally designed to frame a sermon and recounts the story of Christ’s final days, as narrated in the Gospel of St John. The work is deeply expressive, weaving together intricate choral passages with beautifully crafted chorales, many of which are based on familiar hymn tunes that long-time churchgoers and music lovers alike will recognise and appreciate.
The performance boasts an outstanding line-up of professional soloists, all of whom have performed with some of the world’s most prestigious ensembles. Jeremy Budd will take on the role of the Evangelist, with Ben Davies as Christ. The cast is completed by soprano Julie Cooper, mezzo-soprano Rebekah Niesser-Jones, tenor James Oxley, and bass Robert Pritchard. These singers have worked extensively with acclaimed groups such as the Monteverdi Choir, the Gabrieli Consort, and The Sixteen, as well as appearing as soloists across the UK and internationally.
Brecon Singers welcome all music lovers to what promises to be a powerful and inspiring performance in the stunning surroundings of Brecon Cathedral.
Tickets for this peformance are priced at £20 for adults and £10 for under-18s. They are available online at www.breconsingers.com, as well as from Brecon Books and Brecon Pet & Garden Centre.
