Brecon Motor Club celebrated more than a century of the club’s existence at a vibrant event last weekend, showcasing a stunning array of predominantly rally cars from various eras.
Doors opened at 10:30am on Saturday, and footfall quickly surged, with an estimated 1,000 attendees comprising of local residents and visitors eager to explore the remarkable displays. The event not only attracted crowds but no doubt benefitted local traders, a positive outcome for the town.
Among the impressive collection of vehicles was a vintage Singer, a modern Toyota Yaris rally car brought by Jason Pritchard from North Road Garage in Builth Wells, and a magnificent ex-Roger Clark RAC Rally-winning Cossack Ford Escort RS1800 brought along by Jason’s father.
Other notable entries included Malcolm Rich’s Safari Rally Ford Escort and Ford Anglia 105E, as well as Alastair Cavenagh’s Porsche 911 Safari Rally car and Chris Phillips’ Volvo Amazon, which competes in regularity rallies.
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the iconic Alfa Ferrari belonging to Leominster farmer Andy Burton. Built from scratch for stage rallies, this legendary car had been dormant in a barn for 24 years before being showcased in Brecon, where it captivated motorsport enthusiasts. Burton, an exceptional engineer and driver, previously gained fame with this vehicle and another creation before the ban on space-framed rally cars. It was a coup to get it along for the day in Brecon and credit for that and for organising the show goes to the club chairman, Malcolm Rich and his dedicated organising committee.
The other highlight was a special presentation by Ben Cross from Motor Sport UK, the governing body for motorsport, marking the Brecon Motor Club's extraordinary 100-year journey. The event was a fitting tribute to the club's rich history and its enduring legacy in the motorsport community.
The event was very kindly sponsored by CMJ Motors and J&P Engineering and supported by many local businesses that donated prizes for the raffle.
