Brecon Town Council is proud to announce a series of events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The events will honour the courage, sacrifice, and spirit of those who brought peace to Europe after the Second World War.
The commemorations will begin on Thursday, May 8 at 9am, with the raising of a flag and the official Proclamation at the Guildhall, Brecon, setting a respectful and reflective tone for the day.
That evening, the heart of Brecon will come alive with a Community Sing-a-long in Bethel Square, starting at 8pm. This even will be led by the Brecon Town Concert Band. Residents and visitors are invited to join in as the band performs a moving selection of wartime favourites – lyrics will be provided. This uplifting celebration will include a few short speeches to reflect on the significance of VE Day and the lessons learned from our shared history.
Following this, at 9pm, a beacon will be lit, joining thousands of others across the UK, as we collectively sing ‘I Vow to Thee, My Country’, creating a powerful moment of national unity and remembrance.
The commemorations continue on Saturday, May 10, with an afternoon of family entertainment at the Bandstand, the Promenade from 2pm, and a lively community sports day at 3pm. Everyone is encouraged to come along to this fun event and bring a picnic, gather with friends and neighbours, and enjoy a fun and completely free afternoon of music, games, and community spirit.

A spokesperson for Brecon Town Council said: “VE Day is a time to remember the tremendous cost of conflict and the resilience of those who lived through it. By coming together as a community, we honour their legacy, celebrate peace, and reaffirm our commitment to unity and hope for future generations.”
