Monmouthshire Building Society has recently supported Greene King's Tub2Pub campaign, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and recycle plastics.
The Brecon branch has been collecting plastic chocolate, biscuit, and cracker tubs left over after Christmas.
In the UK, tens of millions of plastic tubs are sold every year. Last year, the campaign saved more than 150,000 plastic tubs from landfill and raised £12,600 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The aim is to increase this total year on year.
The Tub2Pub campaign ensures all collected tubs are taken to a plastic reprocessing centre, shredded, and sold to plastic manufacturers as a substitute for virgin plastics, with the proceeds donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Zoe Mathias, Branch Manager at Monmouthshire Building Society in Brecon, said: "We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us with this campaign. We managed to collect over 2,500 tubs. We wanted to beat last year's total of 1,400, and we definitely did that!
“We are overwhelmed by the response as it has really been a community effort.
“Brecon Rotary Club has supported us with this project by collecting tubs within the community.
“A special mention goes to Colette Evans and her team at Powys County Council Waste & Recycling (Brecon Depot) for sifting through the recycling to support us with this.”
Zoe continued: “We are very passionate about recycling and supporting charities, so this was a fantastic project to be a part of.
“During this campaign, we had a visit from a class at Priory Church in Wales Primary School, each dropping off a tub as they are currently learning about recycling. Whilst they were in branch, a colleague engaged with them, explaining the building society and how interest works, using lollipops as an example.”
