Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team has had a busy start to February through training and assisting lost walkers.

The team was stood down on their first call-out of the month on February 3, when they were originally requested to help recover a body found in a stream in Newport. The team was stood down whilst en route as they were no longer needed

The second call-out of the month came on Saturday, February 8, as three well-equipped walkers had become disorientated amongst the low cloud in forestry on Mynydd Blaen Rhondda.

The walkers did the right thing and contacted South Wales Police for help. The team responded and located the walkers before bringing them back to their car safely.

Another call-out soon followed the next day on Sunday, February 9, where the rescue team was called into action when two walkers became lost on the mountain near Penderyn village. The team rescued the uninjured walkers and brought them back to safety.

On the following Saturday, Central Beacons Rescue Team received an early morning request to assist two walkers lost in low cloud in the Neuadd area of Bannau Brycheiniog.

A spokesperson for the rescue team said: “Another similar situation, we located them and got them to safety.

“We’re grateful to Search and Rescue Dog Association South Wales and Brecon Mountain Rescue Team for getting up early and being on stand by to assist, but not needed.

“Alongside all this our weekly and weekend training continues of course. Last Sunday (February 16) our training team had us focussing on search skills, evidence tracking including techniques to help identify a missing person’s direction of travel.

“We await with interest what the rest of February has in store.”
