47 entrants took part in the Bwlch with Altitude Challenge 2024 on Saturday, June 22.

The annual event is now organised by The Star Bunkhouse and Glanpant, with help from friends and neighbours in Bwlch.

The event, which has been running since 2009, was originally developed to showcase the beauty of the hills surrounding Llangorse Lake, and to highlight businesses in the Llangorse and Bwlch Rural Alliance area.

This year, competitors aged 13 years to late 60s from near and far took on the 13-mile walking challenge which started and finished at Bwlch Village Hall.

The challenging route climbed Allt Yr Esgair and Mynydd Llangorse and looped around Llangorse Lake, and was accompanied by an equally challenging quiz to test knowledge of the area’s history and natural history.

The teams, including one from Crickhowell Running Club, said how much they enjoyed it, boosting their confidence for long distance hiking or helping them to prepare for future higher altitude mountain challenges.

Sponsored by local businesses, including The New Inn in Bwlch, The Beacons Farm Shop at the Welsh Venison Centre, Lakeside Caravan & Camping Park, Llangorse Multi Activity Centre, Crickhowell Adventure, and Latte Da in Crickhowell, the event proceeds benefit Bwlch Village Hall and Llangorse and Bwlch Rural Alliance.

Bwlch & Cathedine WI also provided refreshments for participants, raising additional funds to split between the WI and the Village Hall.
