Walkers and outdoor enthusiasts are being invited to take part in one of the area’s most scenic and light-hearted endurance challenges when the Bwlch With Altitude event returns this summer.

The popular 13-mile walking challenge takes place on Saturday, June 28, with teams setting off from Bwlch Village Hall to navigate a circular route that showcases some of the best views in Bannau Brycheiniog and Black Mountains.

Now in its 16th year, Bwlch With Altitude blends physical challenge with fun and community spirit. Participants are given maps, quiz sheets, and electronic wristbands to help them find their way between a series of digital checkpoints, while also testing their knowledge and observation skills along the way.

Walkers are encouraged to take photos, interact with friendly marshals, and embrace the adventure at their own pace - with most teams completing the route in around five to seven hours.

The self-led course, which climbs to several hilltops between Bwlch and Llangorse, ranges in elevation from 160 metres at Llangorse Lake to a high point of 508 metres. The route provides a changing panorama of the surrounding countryside, offering fresh perspectives on some of the region’s most iconic landscapes.

Registration opens at 9am at Bwlch Village Hall (LD3 7HJ), with a safety briefing at 10am. Participants can expect a warm welcome, with tea, coffee, bacon rolls, and homemade cakes on offer courtesy of Bwlch & Cathedine WI.

Organisers recommend parking at the large turning area on Buckland Hill and walking down to the hall - an 11-minute stroll.

With a cap of 60 participants, spaces can be reserved online at: https://www.fabian4.co.uk/default.aspx?EventID=3972

At the finish line, teams will return their wristbands and collect commemorative certificates. Prizes will be awarded not just for the fastest or most accurate teams, but also for other categories.
