Save the Children’s annual Christmas Jumper Day campaign is back tomorrow and children across Wales are coming up with creative ideas on how to take part.
Since 2012, the children’s charity has raised £30 million to support children around the world by asking the public to wear their most wonderful woollies for the day (December 8).
This year, the campaign is set to reach new heights with the UK Government’s Aid Match funding, which will double every donation up to £2 million. The money will directly support the charity’s work in Kenya to increase the quality and availability of essential maternal, newborn and child health nutrition services in Mandera and Turkana counties.
Donations raised by the Welsh public through Christmas Jumper Day will also go towards supporting Save the Children’s vital work in the UK including funding projects in Wales enabling lasting change for the children who need it most.
Save the Children wants this year’s Christmas Jumper Day to be the most earth-friendly yet, which means the charity is hoping people will choose pre-loved woolies and upcycled knits adorned with baubles and tinsel rather than buying new jumpers.
With the cost of living crisis also continuing to bite, school children are encouraged to re-wear a Christmas jumper they already have or even decorate their school jumper with all the temporary festive trimmings they can find – whether it’s a shiny bauble or some sparkly tinsel.
Melanie Simmonds, Head of Save the Children Cymru said: “We’re extremely grateful to the Welsh public, schools and businesses who have been supporting Christmas Jumper Day for over a decade and we hope people in all corners of Wales will join us again this year by wearing a novelty knit on Thursday, December 8 to raise vital funds for children around the world.
“Through our work here in Wales we are able to support children by working in partnership with others within communities, listening to the latest evidence, and most importantly listening to the voices of children and families. A little festive spirit goes a long way to help others.”
